Arbor Day  
In observance of Arbor Day, members of the Panola County Forestry Commission, Tri-Lakes Medical Center, and City of Batesville planted hundreds of trees on the grounds of the hospital last week. Three Shumard oaks were planted on the front lawn, and 300 pines will landscape the grounds between the hospital and the new Super Wal-Mart. New security system added to library expansion
BATESVILLE – Despite frequent rains that held up construction, the expansion of the Batesville Public Library is progressing as planned.

According to Jim Anderson, with the First Regional Library System, the expansion is currently under budget.


City funds maintain facility
BATESVILLE – A Batesville resident told city officials he had a problem with the City of Batesville using its money to maintain a religious facility.

Batesville businessman Woody Loden, III told Batesville?s Board of Aldermen he simply wanted to voice his opinion about the matter.

St. Stephen?s Episcopal Church, known locally as ?The Little Church,? is located on Panola Avenue. It is owned by the City of Batesville and is used as a meeting place for various organizations, both religious and non-religious.


Request squeezes by 3-2 vote, splits aldermen
BATESVILLE – A request that the City of Batesville act as the grant recipient for a proposed low income housing development squeezed by city officials with a 3-2 vote.

Alderman James Yelton, Alderwoman Bobbie Jean Pounders and Alderman-at-Large Hudson Still voted for the request. Aldermen Rufus Manley and Bill Dugger voted against it.


 
Happy Birthday…  

Batesville Mayor Bobby Baker (left) celebrated his 70th birthday during a break from conducting city business last week. City Clerk Judy Savage cut the cake, which was served to Batesville?s Board of Aldermen, as well as visitors, during the break. 


Program to salute area veterans  
     Batesville Intermediate merit students will present the program ?Kids for America? Friday, March 1.  The students invite all veterans to be their guests at 2 PM in the Batesville Intermediate auditorium.  This will be a musical tribute to America.
 

Volunteers needed for hospice care
     Unity Hospice Care, Inc. needs volunteers to assist in providing human kindness to its patients.
     Activities such as baking cookies, writing letters, preparing lunch, reading to a patient or listening to lifetime stories will brighten the day of those in need.

Kids in Kitchen cancelled
   
Kids in the Kitchen, previously scheduled for Tuesday, February 26, has been cancelled.
     The workshop leader, Sally Hunt, is unable to conduct the workshop due to illness.
     The event, which was to be on cake decorating, will be rescheduled at a later date.

Business seminar set for Thurs.
    
A business seminar sponsored by The Panola Partnership will be held Thursday, February 28, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM.
     The event, called ?Competing with Mass Merchandisers,? or ?How to Make Money in Today?s Economy,? will be held in the auditorium at the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), located on Highway 51 North in Batesville.
     Seating is limited.
