Over 400 people turned out for the Steak and Steak Dinner held Thursday, February 14, in the atrium at South Panola High School. The event raised about $20,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of Batesville.

| Plea for funding – Emergency children’s home needed |

BATESVILLE – A plea for funds was made by a Panola County resident seeking assistance to open an emergency children’s home for abused or neglected children.
“My request to you is to solicit your support in whatever way you can provide it,” said Ollie Rice, organizer of the Northwest Emergency Children’s Home, “whether it is assistance in locating or maybe donating a home, making a monetary contribution, or placing this child care home in your annual budget.”

BATESVILLE – City officials will ask the Mississippi Legislature to adopt legislation that would designate a portion of Highway 6 between Batesville and Oxford as the Dr. John R. Lovelace Highway.
Alderwoman Bobbie Jean Pounders asked city officials to adopt a resolution to be presented to the legislature.
Lovelace, a native of Mississippi, has lived in Batesville for more than 40 years. |

| City threatened with legal action |
|
| BATESVILLE – A Batesville resident threatened city officials with legal action if the road he had to travel to get to his home wasn’t repaired soon.
Michael Babb told the Batesville Board of Aldermen his research indicated Barnsdale Road, the road on which he lives, should be a city road and thus maintained by the City of Batesville. Babb presented each board member with a package of documentation he claimed backed up his statement.
“State law mandated that all public county roads be listed on the [Panola County] Registry [of Public Roads] by July 1, 2000,” Babb told city officials. “The Board of Supervisors prepared a map, had a public hearing and accepted the Registry. Therefore, those roads listed on the Registry are public roads,” he said.
The road lies in the City of Batesville’s newly annexed area. City attorney Colmon Mitchell said he totally disagreed.

Black businesses honored
A Salute to Black Businesses will be held Saturday, February 23, at the Pleasant Green Center in Sardis at 7 PM. The event is sponsored by the North Panola Community Day Care. Tickets are $15 per adult and $5 per child. A souvenir book is being put together. Contact Michael Dixon at 563-7454 for more information about the event.

school library. All parents are urged to attend. |
