Samuels, Dorothy Faye
Dorothy Faye Samuels, 63, of Sardis, died Monday, September 30, 2002, at her home of cancer.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 3, at 2 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Longtown Cemetery. Moore Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Samuels, daughter of the late Thomas D. and Quay Glover Mayo, was born November 8, 1938, in Sledge. She was a housewife and a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, Floyd R. Samuels of Sardis; two daughters, Rosa Vaughn of Searcy, Arkansas, and Teresa Jones of Ocean Springs; five sisters, Christine Eddington of Cleveland, Mildred Conway of Crenshaw, Geraldine Bryant of Tunica, Barbara McIver of Eudora, and Lydia Bly of Strayhorn; a brother, Delanie Mayo of Rich; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.


Sanders, Kirby Lee
Kirby Lee Sanders, 82, of Enid, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at his home of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 8, at 2 p.m. at Bethel Methodist Church in Enid. Burial was in the church cemetery. Newson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Sanders was born December 13, 1919. He was retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Newman Sanders of Enid; three daughters, Marilyn Barton of Oakland, Sybil Fortner of Southaven and Cathy Sanders Groner of Charleston; two sons, Bud Sanders of Olive Branch and Wayne Sanders of Batesville; a sister, Mary Ellen Mullin of Meridian; a brother, Hayden Sanders of Southaven; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
 


Sanford, Frieda Claussen
Frieda Claussen Sanford, 92, of Lambert, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at Bolivar County Hospital in Cleveland, of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 17, at 4 p.m. at Kimbro Funeral Home in Marks. Bro. Charles Langford officiated the service. Burial was in Marks Cemetery. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Sanford, daughter of the late Murray James and Maud Ethel Womack Claussen, was born October 8, 1909, in Tutwiler. She graduated from Lambert High School in 1927. She attended Mississippi State College for Women and graduated from Delta State University with a degree in elementary education and a masters degree in education. She first taught school near Magnolia. She taught in Darling, Marks and Oakland before retiring from Lambert. She also taught kindergarten in Memphis, Tennessee, and Marks. She was a member of Lambert Christian Church. She was the widow of the late William Earl Sanford.

Survivors include two daughters, Jonett Sanford Valentine of Cleveland and Mary Catherine "Cissy" Collins of Douglasville, Georgia; a son, William Murray Sanford of Woodstock, Georgia; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Delta State University in Cleveland, or to French Camp.
 


Sartin, Hershel
Hershel Sartin, 77, of Batesville, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at his home of hearth failure.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. at Dickins Chapel. Rev. Steve Cannon officiated the service. Burial followed in Curtis Union Cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Sartain, son of the late William and Florence Roberson Sardis, was born April 27, 1925, in Water Valley. He was a heavy equipment operator and a veteran of World War II. He received Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with two bronze service stars and one bronze Arrowhead Philippine Liberation with one bronze star, Good Conduct Medal for World War II and a Victory Medal.

Survivors include four sons, John Sartin, Carl Sartin, Clinton Sartin and Glenn Sartin, all of Batesville; one daughter, Sue Tubbs of Water Valley; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Scallorn, Mena Margaret 
Mena Margaret Johnson Scallorn, 92, of Sardis, died Monday, February 4, 2002, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of lung disease.

Funeral services were held Thursday, February 7, at 10:30 AM at Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Charles Lipe officiated the service. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery in Sardis. Moore Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Scallorn, daughter of the late W. C. and Maggie Flynn Johnson, was born October 9, 1909, in Memphis, Tennessee. She was a retired employee in the meat department at Big Star, and a member of Hebron Baptist Church. She was the widow of the late Bryant Scallorn. 

Survivors include a daughter, Betty S. Hill of Batesville; a son, Joe Scallorn of Sardis; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and eight great, great-grandchildren.


Scruggs, Rubye Hipps
Rubye Hipps Scruggs, 87, of Memphis died Monday, Dec. 16, at Saint Francis Hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Poplar Chapel. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memphis Funeral Home-Poplar Chapel had charge of arrangements.

She was employed by Continental Bakery.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, L.W. "Bill" Scruggs of Memphis; and people who cared for her, Ron and Jonnie Lundgren of Collierville.

Memorials may be made to an organization of the donor’s choice.


Selby, George Monroe
George Monroe Selby, 73, of Memphis, Tennessee, formerly of Batesville, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – East in Memphis, of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 30, at 2 p.m. at Forest Hill Funeral Home ? East. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery – East. Forest Hill Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Selby was the son of the late Ivy and Sally Reeves Selby. He was a retired engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy, and was a recipient of a commendation from the Korean Ambassador. He was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Henderson Selby of Memphis; two daughters, Jo-Lynn Pezzini of Castorville, California, and Georgette Dwyer of Kansas City, Missouri; three sons, Brad Selby of Bartlett, Tennessee, George Selby, Jr. of Lakeland, Tennessee, and Michael Scott Selby of Santa Cruz, California; a sister, Eddie Jo Brown of Mobile, Alabama; a brother, Owen Selby of Picayune; and seven grandchildren.


Shannon, Grace Odell
Grace Odell Shannon, 83, of Sardis, died Tuesday, August 6, 2002, of heart failure at her home in Sardis.

Graveside services were held Thursday, August 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Sardis. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Shannon, daughter of the late John and Lela Jenkins Dye, was born September 1, 1918, in Calhoun City. She was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God.

Survivors include her husband, W. N. Shannon of Sardis; a daughter, Beverly Shannon of Memphis, Tennessee; a son, Billy Shannon of Blytheville, Arkansas; a brother, Clinton Dye of Alwater, California; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great, great-grandchildren.


Shaw, Alonzo
Alonzo "A.C." Shaw, 73, of Pope, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 3, at 1 p.m. at Pope Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Pope. Rev. William Bailey officiated the service. Burial was in the church cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. had charge of arrangements.

Shaw, son of the late Otto Shaw and Dora Guest, was born May 21, 1929, in Pope. He was a retired logger and cashier, and a member of Pope Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Shaw of Pope; three daughters, Deloris Shaw and Dora Hall, both of Pope, and Gwendolyn Shaw of Holly Springs; a son, Curtis Shaw of Pope; and three grandchildren.


Shaw, J. Harvey Sr.

J. Harvey Shaw, Sr., 97, of Forrest City, Arkansas, formerly of Batesville, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Forrest City of heart failure.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to noon at Coleman Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. Funeral services will begin at noon. Rev. Troy Roscoe will officiate the services. Burial will be in Batesville Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. has charge of arrangements.

Shaw, son of the late Alonzo and Molly Eubanks Shaw, was born October 17, 1904, in Pope. He was a retired educator, a member of the Mississippi Teachers Association and a member of the Masonic Pope Chapel Lodge No. 445A. He was a member of the Coleman Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Shaw Jones of Forrest City and Gwendolyn Cooper of St. Louis, Missouri; two sons, J. Harvey Shaw, Jr. of Moro, Arkansas, and James E. Shaw of Batesville; 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
 


Shenkle, Marjory
Marjory Shenkle, 81, of Sardis, died Friday, November 8, 2002, at Sardis Community Nursing Home of heart failure.

A private service memorial service was held by the family with burial in Forest Hill South.

Shenkle was a retired office manager from United Van Lines and a member of St. Peters United Church of Christ in Du Bois, PA. She was the widow of James Shenkle.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Kelly of Sardis; one son, James Quashnock, of Du Bois, PA; three sisters, Clara Ord, Irene Pierce, and Elizabeth La Borde, all of Du Bois; one brother, Robert Phillips of Frankston, Texas; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.


Simmerman, Albert
Albert Simmerman, 85, of Como, died Tuesday, October 29, 2002, of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 31, at 2 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Robert Smith, Jr., officiated the services. Burial was in Fulmer Church Cemetery. Moore Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Simmerman, was born March 20, 1917. He was a self employed carpenter and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Spencer Simmerman of Como; one daughter, Linda S. Flores of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, James E. Simmerman of Como, and Robert Simmerman of Sardis; three sisters, Lillian Milsap and Cecilia Morris, both of Batesville, Dorothy Braddock of Port Arthur, Texas; and Gertrude Gessell of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Ernest Simmerman of Brownsville, Tenn., and Wallace Simmerman of Hammond, La; and four grandchildren.


Simpson, Maudie
Maudie Simpson, 90, of Sardis, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 23, 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Kevin Crofford officiated the services. Internment was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Simpson, daughter of the late Ben and Annie Lambert Roundtree, was born Oct. 10, 1912 in Camden, Ark. She was the widow of Thomas William Simpson. She was a homemaker and a member of Sardis Lake Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Sarah Vaughn of Batesville, four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and eight great, great-grandchildren.


Slaughter, Russell E.
Russell E. Slaughter, 88, of Southaven, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – DeSoto in Southaven of a heart attack.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 24, at 2 p.m. at Newsom Funeral Home. Burial was in Mt. Pisgah in Enid. Newsom Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Slaughter was born February 3, 1914. He was a retired railroad worker.

Survivors include two sisters, Eunica Sykes of Minter City, and Loy Rippee of Greenville; and a brother, C.A. Slaughter of Oakland.


Small, Ernest
Ernest Small, 85, of Sardis, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Methodist Hospital – Central in Memphis, Tennessee, of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 8, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Green M.B. Church in Sardis. Rev. W. O. McKinney officiated the service. Burial was in the church cemetery. Henderson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Small, son of the late Nathan Small, was born February 20, 1917, in South Carolina. He attended school in Panola County. He was a retired concrete finisher and a member of Pleasant Green M.B. Church.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Small of Sardis; three daughters, Beatrice Hiner of Chicago, Illinois, Rosie V. Small and Sharon D. Small, both of Memphis; a son, Keneth L. Small of Memphis; and three brothers, Gold Stean Small of New York, Andrew Small and David Small, both of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
 


Smith, Darryl Travis Sr.
Darryl Travis Smith, Sr., 48, of Pope, died Wednesday, October 2, 2002, at his home of cancer.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 6, at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Tim Ellis officiated the service. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery in Enid. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Smith, son of the late Samuel Cecil and Betty Alberta Liston Smith, was born June 2, 1954, in Marks. He was a maintenance worker for Batesville Casket Co. and a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Pope. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry Smith and Roy Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia P. Smith of Pope; two daughters, Angela Dawn Smith Darby and Danielle Marie Smith, both of Pope; a son, Darryl Travis Smith, Jr. of Nashville, Tennessee; two step-daughters, Sherry Ann Skipper Atkinson of Courtland and Brandy Lynn Skipper Ware of Batesville; two step-sons, Larry Joseph Pontiff, Jr. and Barry Joseph Pontiff, both of Courtland; six sisters, Alice Smith Winters and Betty Smith, both of Noxapater, Etta Smith Daugherty and Mary Smith Redwine, both of Sardis, Virginia Smith Tutor of Batesville, and Connie Smith Randall of Pope; a brother, Cecil Ray Smith of Courtland; and nine grandchildren.


Smith, Delmer R.
Delmer Smith, 66, of Water Valley, died Friday, November 8, 2002, at Yalobusha County General Hospital of lung cancer.

Services were held Sunday, November 10, at 2:30 p.m. at Sylva Rena Baptist Church in Water Valley. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery. Seven Oaks Funeral Home, Inc. had charge of arrangements.

Smith was retired from the military, and a member of Mason, Shriner and Sylva Rena Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Teruko Smith of Water Valley; five sisters, Ilene Dees of Enid, Jean Johnson and Pearl Boyles, both of Water Valley, Chris Brown of Toledo, Ohio, and Mary Bunch of Horn Lake; three brothers Lester Smith, Jr. and James Smith, both of Water Valley, and Wilson Smith of Horn Lake.


Smith, Evander Franklin
Evander Franklin Smith, 86, of Como, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Northwest Mississippi Medical Center in Clarksdale of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 27, at 10 a.m. at Longtown Methodist Church. Rev. David Watson and Rev. Jerry Salley officiated the service. Burial was in Longtown Cemetery. Moore Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Smith, son of the late Albert and Ellen Johnson Smith, was born April 11, 1916, in Lafayette County. He was a farmer and a member of Longtown Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Urna Wright Smith of Como; a daughter, Dr. Andrea Smith of Clarksdale; and a grandson, Franklin Landry of Clarksdale.


Smith, James C.
James C. Smith, 80, of Sardis, died Thursday, August 22, 2002, at his home of heart failure.

Graveside services were held Saturday, August 24, at 1 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Sardis. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Smith was born February 10, 1922, in Arkansas. He was a retired pipe fitter for Tennessee Valley Authority. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Jean Smith of Sardis; three step-sons, Michael Andrew Sanders of Memphis, Tennessee, Thomas Wayne Sanders of Hernando, and Johnny Vernon Sanders of South Bend, Indiana; a sister, Beula Anders of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and eight step-grandchildren.


Smith, James V.
James Smith, 89, of Millington, Tenn., died Friday, October 25, 2002, at Methodist North of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 28, at 11 a.m. at Northridge/Woodhaven Funeral Home in Millington. Rev. George Golden officiated the services. Burial was in NR/WH Cemetery. Northridge/Woodhaven Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice Smith; five daughters, Judy Holcomb, Jean Bell both of Batesville, Ann Huggins of Covington, Tenn., Betty Tucker of Millington, and Pamela Tichenor of League City, Texas; four sons, Billy Smith of Rogers, Ark., Mickey Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., Jimmy Smith and James Smith, Jr., both of Millington; 24 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one great, great-grandchild.


Smith, Janice Griffis
Janice Griffis Smith, 35, of Pope, died Monday, August 5, 2002, at her home of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 7, at 10 a.m. at Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Pope. Rev. Al Mullan and Rev. Ron Long officiated the service. Burial was in the church cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Smith, daughter of Martha Wesley Griffis of Pope and the late Edward Lee Griffis, was born August 11, 1966, in Batesville. She was a registered nurse for Tri-Lakes Medical Center and a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors, other than her mother, include her husband, Danny L. Smith of Pope; two sons, Andrew Lee Smith and Allan Patrick Smith, both of Pope; a sister, Jeanette Griffis of Hernando; a brother, Jeffrey Lee Griffis of Coldwater; and a number of nieces and nephews.


Smith, Roosevelt
Roosevelt Smith, 46, of Memphis, Tennessee, formerly of Sardis, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, in Memphis of cancer.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 27, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Zion M.B. Church in Sardis. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Henderson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Smith, son of the late John Smith and Ida Mae Jones, was born September 18, 1955, in Panola County. He attended North Panola High School and was a mechanic operator.

Survivors include two daughters, Joe Ann Coley and Shirley Jean Smith, both of Sardis; five sons, Tracy Smith, Roosevelt Smith, Desbitt Smith, James Smith and Terry Smith, all of Sardis; three sisters, Katherine Johnson and Ruthie Smith, both of Memphis, and Lucy Smith of Sardis; and 17 grandchildren.


Smith, Roy Jefferson 
Roy Jefferson Smith, 59, of Courtland, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – East in Memphis, Tennessee, of cancer.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 12, at 2 p.m. at Dickins Chapel. Rev. E. K. Gordon officiated the service. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery in Enid. Dickins Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Smith, son of the late Samuel Cecil and Betty Mae Alberta Smith, was born December 2, 1942, in Batesville. He was a truck driver. He was preceded in death by a son, the late Troy Lynn Smith, a daughter, the late Margaret Ann Tutor, and a brother, the late Jerry Dan Smith.

Survivors include a daughter, Ida Winters of Batesville; a son, Micheal Smith of Courtland; six sisters, Alice Winters and Betty Smith, both of Noxapater, Etta Daughtery, Mary Redwine and Virginia Tutor, all of Batesville, and Connie Randall of Pope; two brothers, Cecil Ray Smith of Courtland and Darryl Smith of Batesville; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Smith, Vada Nelson Dubois
Vada Nelson Dubois Smith, 87, of Pope, died Tuesday, August 6, 2002, in Southaven of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 8, at 2 p.m. at Dickins Chapel. Rev. Don Gregory and Rev. Charles Hardy, Jr. officiated the service. Burial was in Chapel Hill in Pope. Dickins Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Smith, daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Ester File Nelson, was born December 24, 1914, in Pope. She was retired from the Batesville Hosiery Mill and a member of Chapel Hill Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, B.D. Dubois of Oakland and Ken Smith of Memphis, Tennessee; a daughter, Frances Hardy of Southaven; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a great, great-grandchild.

Dottie Herring Snyder, 68, of Batesville, died Sunday, February 10, 2002, at Beverly Health Care in West Memphis, Arkansas, of heart failure.

Survivors include her husband, Walter R. Snyder of West Memphis, Arkansas; a daughter, Angelia D. Sebree of Wilmington, North Carolina; a son, Walter Roy Snyder of Wilmington; two step-daughters, Betty Bennett of Nesbit and Barbara Johnson of Bartlett, Tennessee; two step-sons, Walter D. Snyder of Horn Lake and L. D. Snyder of Edgefield, South Carolina; five sisters, Nina Watts and Mary Faulkner, both of Kosciusko, Marjorie Stroud of Double Springs, Alabama, Faye Russell of Grenada, and her twin sister, Nell Desmond of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; a brother, Robert Stanley Herring of McCool, and one grandson.


Snyder, Hattie Corinne
Hattie Corinne Snyder, 90, of Sardis, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of pancreatitis.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 26, at 2 p.m. at Dickins Chapel. Rev. Jerry Sanford officiated the service. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Dickins Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Snyder, daughter of the late Jessie Arvin and Etna Florance Eubanks Marbery, was born December 2, 1911, in Panola County. She was a retired factory worker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Sardis.

Survivors include a son, Charles Snyder of Sardis; two daughters, Christine Barnes of Lonoke, Arkansas, and Margaret Tidwell of Richland; seven grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.


Socha, Virginia Anne
Virginia Anne Socha, 84, of Memphis, Tenn., died Tuesday, Dec. 17, at her daughter’s home in Memphis of heart failure.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m. at Annunciation Catholic Church in Columbus. Father Jerry Hurley will officiate the service. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until service time at Annunciation Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery in Columbus. Wells Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Socha, daughter of the late Frank and Anna Peal Jurczyk, was born March 6, 1918 in Pittsfield, Md. She was the widow of Zygmunt "Ziggy" John Socha and a homemaker. She was also a member of the Annunciation Catholic Church and a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Columbus.

Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Socha Candebat of Cordova, Tenn. and Donna Socha Wolford of Memphis; one sister, Helen Jurczyk of Pittsfield; two brothers, Deward Jurczyk and Joe Jurczyk, both of Pittsfield; and two step-grandsons.
 


Starr, Josie Huff "Tiny"
Josie Huff Starr, of Batesville, died Monday, Nov. 18 at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.

Graveside services was Nov. 21, 2 p.m. at Marks Cemetery. Internment was at Marks Cemetery. Rev. Ricky Haynes will officiate services. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Josie, widow of F. R. "Ned" Starr, daughter of William Prince and Edna Roach Huff, was born Dec. 18, of Carrollton. She was homemaker and a member of Sledge United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her son, Raynor Starr; 3 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.


Statham, Gaylen Wayne
Gaylen Wayne Statham, 56, of Sardis, died Friday, September 27, 2002, at his home of heart failure.

No funeral services were held. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Statham, son of Martha Yvonne Statham Glossup of Cold Springs, Texas and the late Dan M. Statham, was born August 5, 1946, in Austin, Texas. He was disabled.

Survivors, other than his mother, include his wife, Jackie Williamson Statham of Sardis; a daughter, Louise Clark Statham of Texas; a son, Danny Statham of Texas; and a step-daughter, Terri Smith of Sardis.


Stewart, Lucious A. Jr.
Lucious A. ‘Sam’ Stewart, Jr., 69, of Sardis, died Thursday, February 21, 2002, at Methodist Health Care South in Memphis, Tennessee, of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 24, at 2 p.m. at Felix Cauthen Funeral Home in Senatobia. He was cremated. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Stewart, son of the late Lucious Sr. and Cora Smith Stewart, was born January 6, 1933, in Sardis. He was a member of Walton Chapel C.M.E. Church.

Survivors include a son, Robert Earl Stewart of Clearfield; two daughters, Tracy Salter of Sardis and Gisele Lewis of Memphis, Tennessee; four sisters, Birda Johnson and Eva Johnson, both of Chicago, Illinois; Luella Jackson of Como, and Teresa Fuller of Kosciusko; four brothers, Lewis J. Stewart and George E. Stewart, both of Memphis, Tennessee, John H. Stewart of Sardis and William H. Stewart of Forest Park, Illinois; and 10 grandchildren.


Stinson, Frank "Sonny"
Frank "Sonny" Stinson, 68, of Courtland, died Friday, November 1, 2002, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 6, at 1 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Melvin Ellis officiated the services. Burial was in Pope Chapel Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. had charge of arrangements.

Stinson, son of the late Frank and Mary Stinson, was born August 27, 1934, in Yalobusha County. He was a retired construction worker and a member of Pope Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

Survivors include his two daughters, Lisa Holman of Batesville, and Diane Turner of Fla.; three sons, Bobby Joe Turner of Oakland, Jerry Stinson of Sardis, and James Spooky Bradford of Batesville; three sisters, Pearlean Willis of Vardaman, Hannah Stinson of Charleston, and Martha Mae Thompson of Milwaukee, Wis., and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


Stovall, Elmo G.
Elmo G. Stovall, 89, of Batesville, formerly of Houston, Texas, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 26, at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Alan Kilgore officiated the service. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday, June 4, at 11 a.m. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Stovall, son of the late Raymond and Edna French Stovall, was born June 28, 1912, in Gatesville, Texas. He was a retired supervisor for Tennaco Gas Company for over 30 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Batesville, a member of East Gate Masonic Lodge No. 1153 in Houston, Texas, and a member of Eastern Star.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel Stovall of Batesville; a daughter, Georgia Ruth Houlgrave of Shreveport, Louisiana; a step-son, John Kilpatrick of Batesville; two sisters, Shirley Lowe and Virginia McDonald, both of Port Arthur, Texas; a brother, Raymond Roy Stovall of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
