Dorothy Faye Samuels, 63, of Sardis, died Monday, September 30, 2002, at her home of cancer.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 3, at 2 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Longtown Cemetery. Moore Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Samuels, daughter of the late Thomas D. and Quay Glover Mayo, was born November 8, 1938, in Sledge. She was a housewife and a Baptist.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd R. Samuels of Sardis; two daughters, Rosa Vaughn of Searcy, Arkansas, and Teresa Jones of Ocean Springs; five sisters, Christine Eddington of Cleveland, Mildred Conway of Crenshaw, Geraldine Bryant of Tunica, Barbara McIver of Eudora, and Lydia Bly of Strayhorn; a brother, Delanie Mayo of Rich; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Kirby Lee Sanders, 82, of Enid, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at his home of heart failure.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 8, at 2 p.m. at Bethel Methodist Church in Enid. Burial was in the church cemetery. Newson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Sanders was born December 13, 1919. He was retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Frieda Claussen Sanford, 92, of Lambert, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at Bolivar County Hospital in Cleveland, of heart failure.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 17, at 4 p.m. at Kimbro Funeral Home in Marks. Bro. Charles Langford officiated the service. Burial was in Marks Cemetery. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Sanford, daughter of the late Murray James and Maud Ethel Womack Claussen, was born October 8, 1909, in Tutwiler. She graduated from Lambert High School in 1927. She attended Mississippi State College for Women and graduated from Delta State University with a degree in elementary education and a masters degree in education. She first taught school near Magnolia. She taught in Darling, Marks and Oakland before retiring from Lambert. She also taught kindergarten in Memphis, Tennessee, and Marks. She was a member of Lambert Christian Church. She was the widow of the late William Earl Sanford.
Survivors include two daughters, Jonett Sanford Valentine of Cleveland and Mary Catherine "Cissy" Collins of Douglasville, Georgia; a son, William Murray Sanford of Woodstock, Georgia; and three grandchildren.

Hershel Sartin, 77, of Batesville, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at his home of hearth failure.

Sartain, son of the late William and Florence Roberson Sardis, was born April 27, 1925, in Water Valley. He was a heavy equipment operator and a veteran of World War II. He received Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with two bronze service stars and one bronze Arrowhead Philippine Liberation with one bronze star, Good Conduct Medal for World War II and a Victory Medal.
Survivors include four sons, John Sartin, Carl Sartin, Clinton Sartin and Glenn Sartin, all of Batesville; one daughter, Sue Tubbs of Water Valley; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Scallorn, daughter of the late W. C. and Maggie Flynn Johnson, was born October 9, 1909, in Memphis, Tennessee. She was a retired employee in the meat department at Big Star, and a member of Hebron Baptist Church. She was the widow of the late Bryant Scallorn.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty S. Hill of Batesville; a son, Joe Scallorn of Sardis; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and eight great, great-grandchildren.

Rubye Hipps Scruggs, 87, of Memphis died Monday, Dec. 16, at Saint Francis Hospital.

She was employed by Continental Bakery.

Shaw, son of the late Alonzo and Molly Eubanks Shaw, was born October 17, 1904, in Pope. He was a retired educator, a member of the Mississippi Teachers Association and a member of the Masonic Pope Chapel Lodge No. 445A. He was a member of the Coleman Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

Marjory Shenkle, 81, of Sardis, died Friday, November 8, 2002, at Sardis Community Nursing Home of heart failure.

Shenkle was a retired office manager from United Van Lines and a member of St. Peters United Church of Christ in Du Bois, PA. She was the widow of James Shenkle.

Statham, Gaylen Wayne
Gaylen Wayne Statham, 56, of Sardis, died Friday, September 27, 2002, at his home of heart failure.
No funeral services were held. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Statham, son of Martha Yvonne Statham Glossup of Cold Springs, Texas and the late Dan M. Statham, was born August 5, 1946, in Austin, Texas. He was disabled.
Survivors, other than his mother, include his wife, Jackie Williamson Statham of Sardis; a daughter, Louise Clark Statham of Texas; a son, Danny Statham of Texas; and a step-daughter, Terri Smith of Sardis.
Stewart, Lucious A. Jr.
Lucious A. ‘Sam’ Stewart, Jr., 69, of Sardis, died Thursday, February 21, 2002, at Methodist Health Care South in Memphis, Tennessee, of heart failure.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 24, at 2 p.m. at Felix Cauthen Funeral Home in Senatobia. He was cremated. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Stewart, son of the late Lucious Sr. and Cora Smith Stewart, was born January 6, 1933, in Sardis. He was a member of Walton Chapel C.M.E. Church.
Survivors include a son, Robert Earl Stewart of Clearfield; two daughters, Tracy Salter of Sardis and Gisele Lewis of Memphis, Tennessee; four sisters, Birda Johnson and Eva Johnson, both of Chicago, Illinois; Luella Jackson of Como, and Teresa Fuller of Kosciusko; four brothers, Lewis J. Stewart and George E. Stewart, both of Memphis, Tennessee, John H. Stewart of Sardis and William H. Stewart of Forest Park, Illinois; and 10 grandchildren.
Stinson, Frank "Sonny"
Frank "Sonny" Stinson, 68, of Courtland, died Friday, November 1, 2002, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 6, at 1 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Melvin Ellis officiated the services. Burial was in Pope Chapel Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. had charge of arrangements.
Stinson, son of the late Frank and Mary Stinson, was born August 27, 1934, in Yalobusha County. He was a retired construction worker and a member of Pope Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.
Survivors include his two daughters, Lisa Holman of Batesville, and Diane Turner of Fla.; three sons, Bobby Joe Turner of Oakland, Jerry Stinson of Sardis, and James Spooky Bradford of Batesville; three sisters, Pearlean Willis of Vardaman, Hannah Stinson of Charleston, and Martha Mae Thompson of Milwaukee, Wis., and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Stovall, Elmo G.
Elmo G. Stovall, 89, of Batesville, formerly of Houston, Texas, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 26, at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Alan Kilgore officiated the service. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday, June 4, at 11 a.m. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Stovall, son of the late Raymond and Edna French Stovall, was born June 28, 1912, in Gatesville, Texas. He was a retired supervisor for Tennaco Gas Company for over 30 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Batesville, a member of East Gate Masonic Lodge No. 1153 in Houston, Texas, and a member of Eastern Star.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel Stovall of Batesville; a daughter, Georgia Ruth Houlgrave of Shreveport, Louisiana; a step-son, John Kilpatrick of Batesville; two sisters, Shirley Lowe and Virginia McDonald, both of Port Arthur, Texas; a brother, Raymond Roy Stovall of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
