Murtis Tatum Ladd, 50, of Batesville, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi in Oxford, of heart failure.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at West Camp M.B. Church. Rev. J. N. Mobley officiated the service. Burial was in the church cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. had charge of arrangements.
Ladd, daughter of the late James and Clarine Smith Tatum, was born June 27, 1951, in Batesville. She was a factory worker for Springs Industries and a member of Mt. Zion M.B. Church.
Survivors include a daughter, LaTanya Hamilton of Batesville; three sons, James Hamilton of Batesville, Tyrone Hamilton of Killeen, Texas, and Robert E. Hamilton, Jr., of El Paso, Texas; and seven grandchildren.
Lambert, James Richard
James Richard Lambert, 62, of Pope, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Central in Memphis, Tennessee, of heart failure.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 6, at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Ricky Cook and Rev. Lennie Maples officiated the service. Burial was in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Lambert, son of the late John Daniel and Eary Lee Garrett Lambert, was born September 29, 1939, in Panola County. He was a retired maintenance worker from The Thermos Co. and was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Vontice Howell Lambert of Pope; a son, James Richard "Richie" Lambert, Jr. of Pope; and two sisters, Eadelyn Lambert Sellers of Cordova, Tennessee, and Reba Loys Lambert Atkinson of Hernando.
Land, Jesse Clifton
Jesse Clifton Land, 86, of Clinton, formerly of Batesville, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 31, at Mt. Salus Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in Clinton City Cemetery. Lakewood Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Land, son of the late Harris and Margaret Land, was born July 17, 1916, in Batesville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as captain in the 1st Calvary Division and was stationed in the Philippines during World War II. He also served as major in the U.S. National Guard in Tupelo.
A resident of Clinton since 1962, Land was a retired labor analyst for the Mississippi State Employment Security Commission. He was an active member and former deacon of Mt. Salus Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Pridmore Land of Clinton; two daughters, Jane Land Patete of Atlanta, Ga. and Sally Land Daughdrill of Prentiss; one sister, Louise Land Tyler of Wiggins; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Lee, Willie Mae
Willie Mae Lee, 80, of Como, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 8, at 1 p.m. at Ruffin Grove M.B. Church in Como. Burial will be in Mt. Level Cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Lee was a housewife. She was a member of Ruffin Grove M.B. Church, where she served on the Mother Board and was a life member.
Survivors include a daughter, Louevine Armstrong of Sardis; a sister, Alice Black of Como; five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Levesque, Jorge Allen Jr.
Jorge Allen Levesque, Jr., 15, of Sardis, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, on Highway 315 West in Sardis of heart failure.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 9, at 1 p.m. at the Sardis Educational Building. Burial was in Mt. Level Cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home in Senatobia had charge of arrangements.
Levesque, son of Rick Nelson and Shana Nelson, both of Sardis, was a student at North Panola High School. He played football and basketball for North Panola High School. His hobbies included horseback riding. He loved all types of farm animals.
Survivors, other than his parents, include five sisters, Rickniss Nelson, Jasmine Nelson and Renada Dandridge, all of Sardis, Audranna Young of Como, and Janell Levesque of Aurora, Illinois; two brothers, Rick Nelson, Jr. of Sardis and Jeffery Levesque of Aurora; and grandparent, Minnie Davis.
Lewis, Mary Ann Meurrier
Mary Ann Meurrier Lewis, 57, of Water Valley, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Yalobusha County Hospital in Water Valley of cancer.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 28, at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Water Valley. Rev. Don Lewis and Rev. Dr. Billy Ray Stonestreet officiated the service. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville. Dickins Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Lewis, daughter of the late Robert Laverne and Lucy Bell Jackson Meurrier, was born June 2, 1944, in Panola County. She attended Northwest Mississippi Community College. She was a reading instructor in the Water Valley Public Schools for 18 years. She was a member of the Water Valley First United Methodist Church, a life member of the Water Valley Junior Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, John Mallory Lewis, Sr. of Water Valley; two daughters, Allison Lewis Larson of Water Valley and Amanda Lewis Wilder of Batesville; a son, Jack Lewis of Ridgeland; and six grandchildren.

Lightsey, Virginia Darby
Virginia Darby Lightsey, 70, of Sardis, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at her residence of heart failure.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. at Willow Springs Assembly of God in Pope. Interment was in Bethel Cemetery in Enid. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Lightsey, daughter of the late, Ed and Bertha Elliott Darby, was born Nov. 14, 1932 in Tallahatchie County. She was the widow of H.J. Lightsey. She was also the former owner of Senatobia Snack Shack and Lightsey’s Shoe Store.
Survivors include one daughter, Claudine W. Standard of Sardis; and one sister, Rosie Darby Austin of Courtland.
Lipscomb, William Taylor
William Taylor "Bill" Lipscomb, 55, of Sardis, died Friday, August 23, 2002, on Highway 51 North in Sardis from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 25, at 2 p.m. at Como United Methodist Church. Rev. Norman Holiday and Rev. Gladwyn Clark officiated the service. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery in Como. Moore Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Lipscomb, son of R.W. "Buddy" and Rebecca Highbaugh Lipscomb of Como, was born September 9, 1946, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the co-owner of Lipscomb Brothers Livestock Market in Como. He was a member of Como United Methodist Church and the International Rodeo Association.
Survivors, other than his parents, include his wife, Marie Still Lipscomb of Sardis; a daughter, Becky Clark of Argyle, Texas; two sons, Mike Lipscomb of Batesville and Mark Lipscomb of Como; a step-daughter, Donna Boling of Jackson; a step-son, Rivers McArthur of Sardis; a brother, Bobby Lipscomb of Como; and seven grandchildren.
Locke, Patricia King
Patricia King Locke, 59, of Batesville, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at her home of cancer.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 11, at 2 p.m. at Goodwill Church of God. Rev. Jerry Hill and Rev. Eugene Howell officiated the service. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Locke, daughter of the late William Edward and Bena Carson King, was born August 4, 1942, in Lambert. She was a retired elementary school teacher of Lambert and Marks schools, a homemaker and a member of Locke Station Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard H. "Bud" Locke, Sr. of Batesville; a daughter, Bena Louise Locke Cullom of Summit; three sons, Leonard H. Locke, Jr. and Stephen A. Locke, both of Batesville, and James Edward Locke of Marks; a sister, Margaret King Horne of Grenada; a brother, William "Bill" King of Silver Springs, Maryland; and seven grandchildren.
Long, Phillip Newell
Phillip Newell Long, 53, of Myrtle died Monday, November 25, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County in New Albany.
Services were at United Funeral Service Chapel. Dr. Lou Zemek officiated services. Interment was at Bethel Cemetery. United Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Long was an investigator with the Union County Sheriff’s Department. He was a former Highway Patrolman and a former veterans service officer. He was a member of the Army Reserve, the American Legion, and the Rocky Ford Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Riley Long of Myrtle; two daughters, Amy Cummins of Drew and Brooke Long of Jonesboro, AR; four sisters, Beverly White, Marca Simmerman, and Renya Wolfe, all of Sardis, and Brenda Stokes of Jackson; and one brother, Gaal Long of Sardis.
Lynam, Harold B.
Harold B. Lynam, 73, of Batesville, died Monday, February 11, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – East in Memphis, Tennessee, of cancer.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 13, at 10 AM at First United Methodist Church in Batesville. Rev. Don Lewis and Rev. Martin Case officiated the service. Burial was in Stanton, Delaware. Dickins Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Lynam, son of the late Raymond B. and Mary Appleby Lynam, was born February 6, 1929, in Stanton, Delaware. He was a retired product training manager for Sperry New Holland Corp., where he was employed for 36 years. He attended the U.S. Military Academy and was a Second Lt. in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was chairman of the Panola County Republican Party, MSSDA Private Industry Council, chairman of the Coordination Committee and a member of The Executive Committee. He was chairman of The Bush for President in Panola County and was elected delegate to the National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by a brother, the late George Lynam. Survivors include his wife, Anne Lynam of Batesville; a sister, Carrie Naudain of Hockessin, Delaware; two nieces and two nephews.
