Snow in March?
On March 21-22, 1968 a snowstorm blew into North Mississippi with accumulations up to umpteen inches according to those who survived to exaggerate the story. Question is: Do you think we will experience snowfall with accumulation this March?

Beatrice Atwood Barnes

BATESVILLE-- Beatrice Atwood Barnes, 88, died Friday, September 3, 2010 at Golden Living Center.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Highland Cemetery in Johnson City, Tenn. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Barnes, born March 31, 1922, in Tennessee, was the retired owner/operator of Jody’s Dress Shop in Johnson City.

Survivors include: two grandchildren, Kristyn Sumpter of Senatobia and Erica Sumpter of Franklin, Tenn. and three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Taylor and Presley.


Adrian “Buster” Bradshaw

BATESVILLE-- Adrian “Buster” Bradshaw, 73, of Batesville,  formerly of Memphis,  died Friday, September 3, 2010.

Funeral services were held Thursday, September 8 at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis.

Bradshaw, retired from International Harvester in Memphis, was  preceded in death by his wife, Carole Sue Bradshaw. 

He is survived by his two daughters, Terry Montgomery and Pam Bradshaw; and his son, William Bradshaw.


Charles Evers Burnett

BATESVILLE-- Charles Evers Burnett, 34, died Thursday, September 2, 2010.

Services were Monday at Pilgrim Rest M.B. Church in Crenshaw. Dr. Zannie Leland Jr. officiated. Burial was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Como. Henderson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Burnett, born Jan. 26, 1976, in Batesville, to Eugene Burnett Jr. and Kathy Jean Burnett of Batesville, attended South Panola School and Northwest Mississippi Community College. He was a truck driver and a member of Pilgrim Rest M.B. Church.

Survivors along with his parents include: his wife, Tekela S. Burnett of Batesville; one daughter, Tamera Burnett of Oxford; one brother, Allan E. Burnett of Batesville; one sister, Felecia Burnett of Jackson; one step-son, Mondrecius Smallie of Batesville; one step-daughter, Tekerah Towns of Batesville and his grandparents, Eugene and Hester Burnett of Batesville, Sidney and Emma Sanford of Courtland and Katherine Lloyd of Batesville.


Arlond Darby

SOUTHAVEN-- Arlond Darby, 75, retired clerk for Sears, died Thursday, Septe Funeral services were held September 5 at Twin Oaks

Funeral Home in Southaven. Burial was in Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens. mber 2, 2010 at his home.  

Darby was born June 24, 1935 in Enid to the late Fred Lee and Madie Darby. He was a Baptist and an Army veteran.    

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Wanda Darby of Southaven; two sons, Randy Darby of Nesbit and Keith Darby of Robertsdale, Ala.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Gideons International.


Calvin L. Foster

MEMPHIS-- Calvin L. Foster, 84, died Friday, September 3, 2010.

Services were held Sunday, September 5, at Memorial Park Funeral Home.

He was born in Sardis, and graduated from Sardis High School in 1943. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church.

He is also a 1955 graduate of Memphis State University. He worked as a sales representative for Simmon’s Abrasives. He started Foster Inc., and continued a career in the manufacturing industry until his retirement in 2000.

He was a former member, board member and Deacon at Beverly Hills Baptist Church. He served in WWII with the Army 281st Combat Engineer Battalion at the battle of the Bulge, D-Day and Korean War campaigns. He was as an Army reservist until his retirement after 37 years of service with the rank of Full Bird Colonel.

Survivors include: his wife of 68 years, Doris Trammell Foster; one daughter, Rebecca Foster Gosnell; and two sons, Calvin Foster Jr. and David Foster, all of Memphis. He also leaves six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He leaves one sister Lorene Hudson of Sardis; three brothers, Cecil Foster and Hugh Foster, both of Hernando; and Sonny Foster of Sardis.


Mary Katherine Faust

SLEDGE-- Mary Katherine Faust, 81, died Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at her residence.

Services were Thursday at Hollywood Baptist Church in Sledge. Rev. Roy Hartzell officiated. Burial was in Longtown Cemetery in Crenshaw. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Faust, born Aug. 22, 1929, to Decie Parrish Aldison and James Tommy Aldison Sr., was a homemaker and a member of Hollywood Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Polly Ann Faust Borland of Flower Mound, Texas; two sons, Norris W. Faust Jr. of Sardis and Terry L. Faust of Cartersville, Ga.; one sister, Barbara Nell Dykes of Sledge; one brother, John D. Aldison of Crenshaw; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be sent to Hollywood Baptist Church, 2220 Wadlington Rd., Sledge, Miss. 38670.


J.C. McGinnis

HALEYVILLE, Ala.--  J.C. McGinnis, 69, died Saturday, September 4, 2010, at his residence. He was the brother of Faye Williamson Walker of Batesville.

Services were Wednesday at 1 p.m. at National Funeral Home. Rev. Ricky Grimes and Rev. Wesley Downs officiated. Burial was in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Clarksdale.

McGinnis, born Aug. 10, 1941, in Clarksdale, to James T. and Lillian Baker McGinnis, retired from the Mississippi Department of Corrections as a correctional officer. He was a member of the Shining Light Church in Haleyville.

He was preceded in death by one son, Arnold McGinnis.

Survivors along with his sister, include: his wife of 49 years, Martha Stewart McGinnis of Haleyville;  three sons, James Allen McGinnis of Hernando, Robert Dewayne McGinnis of Haleyville and Anthony McGinnis of Guin, Ala.; one daughter, Karen McGinnis Jennings of Haleyville; one sister, Johnnie Mae Childress of Houston; one brother, Bill McGinnis of Farrell; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.


Cecil McGhee

BATESVILLE--Cecil “C-Say” McGhee, 91, died Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at his residence.

Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Liberty Hill M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. Larry Key will officiate. Burial will be in Eureka Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

McGhee, born July 27, 1919, in Batesville, to Rev. Perry McGhee and Annie Pearl Hentz, was a driver for J.C. Dunlap and an employee for Dunlap and Kyle. He was a member of Liberty Hill M.B. Church in Courtland.

Survivors include: three daughters, Cecil Mae McGhee of Batesville, Narvell McGhee and Natasha McGhee, both of Sledge; two step-daughters, Francis Greene of Batesville and Bobbie Sue Skinner of Vicksburg; one step-son, Damon Andrews of Batesville; one brother, Calvin McGhee of Newton; 22 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.


David Smiley Jr.

BATESVILLE-- David Smiley Jr., 67, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at Golden Living Center.

Services were Wednesday at the Batesville Church of Christ. Walter Williams officiated. Burial was in Batesville Cemetery.

Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.

Smiley, born November 24, 1942, to David Sutton Smiley and Beatrice Lucas, was a retired laborer and a member of Liberty Heights Church of Christ.

Survivors include: his wife, Lula Smiley of Batesville; five daughters, Connorie Russell, Laura Allen and Shirley Joiner, all of Milwaukee, Keasia Smalley of Swansea, Ill. and Sheila Smiley of Swansea, Ill.; three sons, Cyrus Doyle, Shamacon Doyle, both of Batesville and Durand Doyle of Chicago; seven sisters, Gert Elim, Leola Tabor, Linda Smalley, Ruby Tillis, Michelle Smiley and Joyce Smiley, all of Milwaukee and Lula Mae of Chicago; four brothers, Jessie Smiley, James Smiley, Jerry Smiley and Harry Smiley.


Janet Harrington Finch Sedano

BATESVILLE-- Janet Harrington Finch Sedano, 54, died Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at Baptist Hospital-North Mississippi. She was the daughter of the late Gov. and Mrs. Cliff Finch. Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 11 at Batesville Magnolia Cemetery.

Dickins Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

She was a portrait artist and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Zelma Valentia Sedano of Oxford; one sister, Anne Finch Walker of Batesville; two brothers, Charles Finch and Nicholas Finch, both of Sardis.

Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church in Batesville.
