Mother faces  murder charge

A 16-year-old high school junior has been charged with the murder of a new born baby and was in the Panola County Jail under $100,000 bond.

Panola County Sheriff Otis Griffin said Monday that Linda Nash will be tried as an adult and the family home on the Pope-Water Valley Road was was being treated as a crime scene. She was a student at North Delta School.

According to Griffin investigators from the Panola County Sheriff's office were notified Saturday evening  that an already deceased newborn was brought to the emergency room at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

A preliminary report from an autopsy indicated that the newborn died from "stab wound to the abdomen," according to Griffin.

The incident apparently happened at the home of the mother and her parents and the newborn was transported to Tri-lakes along with mother and grandparents in the family car.

"I would say she was probably hiding the pregnancy from her parents," Griffin said Monday at a news conference

North Delta School headmaster John Howell Jr. said Tuesday, "The North Delta School family is heartbroken over the tragedy and extends our sympathy to the Nash family. Our prayers are with them during this trying time. Our teachers and students are shocked and hurting, and we have developed the best plan that we can to help them and to meet these needs on our campus."

According to Griffin there has been no confession. Batesville attorney Tom Womble is representing Nash.

I know there will be many negative comments on here. Our first instict is to be so appalled and want equal justice-an eye for an eye. I have judged such situations like this myself before. However, after coming to know this child, my eyes have been opened. This child not only fooled her parents and those around her-she convinced herself she wasn't pregnant. I truly believe she was in a state of undescribable panic. Had this been premeditated, I'm sure that she would have come up with something other than stabbing the baby to death in her family's home. She could have gone off somewhere to do this and noone would be the wiser. So yes, she could have given this baby to someone, left at the hospital, fire dept. etc. But we are not speaking about a rational child. It is no wonder that our young people are so screwed up. We are so politically correct. Forget the bible, our judicial system says abortion is a woman's choice. We can't take away their right to choose. This makes me sick to my stomach. This is why there is such a lack of value for human life. If we want this world to change and our children to not be warped, then we need to get back to the bible where all murder is wrong. There is no grey area. Yes, this child should be held accountable for her actions, but so should our nation. I truly pray for Linda, her family, and that precious baby boy. Some people may not believe, but I know that he is with God where no more harm can come to him. I hope Linda gets help and not just thrown away. I hope we can all stop judging and try to learn something from this horrific event. I hope we all open our eyes and stop being too busy to notice our children. I hope this nation will not worry about political correctness but biblical values.

I am so sorry for her and her parents. The thought that she felt that this was the only solutions or that she could not go to anyone for guidance breaks my heart. My prayers are with her, her family and anyone else affected by this tragedy. I pray that she gets the counseling and help that she truly needs now and in the future and like the other commenter stated I pray that she just isn't thrown away by society or the system. We are quick to charge children as adults when it comes to crime but by the same token when it comes to other circumstances they need legal consent or to be of age (e.g.) military, marrying, driving, drinking, smoking, quitting school, birth control...They are not old enough to make these decisions but they are old enough to be held accountable for all other actions. I am so glad that God is not like man...again my prayers to the family and my heart bleeds for the little one who's earthly life was cut so short because of fear, ridicule, shame and lack of knowledge.

I am in prayer for the Nash family, our community, the attorneys.. the judge.. Lord just put your hand on everyone. Some things will never make sense, but it's not our job to judge or try to understand any of it. As a Christian, I know the Lord will forgive her just as He will forgive any of us for our sins. Judging someone is a sin in itself and I have seen some terrible and hurtful remarks made on other blogs. It is a shame. Nash Family, please know that this community is praying for you and God will help everyone through this tragedy.

This is a terrible tragedy for both mother and child; however, it is something that happens a lot. As a mother I am deeply saddened for the innocent baby boy, but as a parent, I am more deeply saddened for the teenage mother who has lost so much and had no where to turn. She gave life and she took life, but somewhere down the line, her own life was taken. Pregnancy is something that affects each woman differently so imagine the effect it must have had on this teenager. Our justice system is designed to be fair and just, and I pray that her punishment is just and fair, and that those who may judge her take the time to truly consider her situation and her frame of mind in this matter.

Lord i pray that you and your family will pull thru this tragedy. I feel that something else was on her mind. Give this young lady the help that she need instead of just throwing her away. Society will label her so please pray for her.

I feel sadness for Linda, but my deepest sympathy is for that innocent baby.I will not cast judgement on her because GOD will be her final judge. We as humans are so quick to say what should happen to her,but let's be considerate. We don't know what her situation was at home or who fathered her baby.Don't get me wrong this baby's life should have been spared and she should be punish(if she did it),but she haven't confessed to killing her baby and I believe in innocent until proven guilty.I just don't believe her parents didn't know she was pregnant.Did they pay her that little attention that they couldn't see the changes in her body?Just imagine how this 16 year old felt, pregnant and noone she could talk to.Parents our children should be able to talk to us about anything.

Being in the medical field i know there are many conditions that can affect a womans mind when she becomes pregnant, chemical and hormonal imbalances are a powerful thing, but i just find it hard to believe that no one knew she was pregnant. And there were so many more choices she could have made, yes she was young but now days younger people know more than some of the older ones and going to North Delta School we know she wasnt stupid. And yes i agree with the other comments , i also think the "father" of this child should be charged as well, and i 100% agree with them treating her as an adult. You are responsable for your actions, weather good, bad or indiffrent.
