Municipal judge releases woman from jail in time for holidays; given suspended time

Judge Bill McKenzie released a Batesville woman from jail in time for the holidays.

Joani Howell, 123 Trianon, Batesville, had old fines of $2,019 that have been due since May 2003.

She had 90 days suspended jail sentence after failing to complete her assigned number of days on the city work program.

“We need a CPA to look through your stuff,” said McKenzie.

Howell explained to the judge she didn’t finish her days on the work program because she was pregnant but could now pay her fines.

McKenzie told her to have her fines paid in full within 30 days or she would serve six months in jail instead of 90 days in jail.

“Pay it or serve it,” he said.

Grand Jury

Michael Pearson, 91-A Sanford, Courtland, was referred to the Grand Jury for Felony DUI, carelss driving and driving while license suspended.

Jeffery Nelson, 201 Atkins St., Sardis, was referred to the Grand Jury for robbery, burglary-auto and two counts of shoplifting.

Initial appearance

Mitchell Byars, 5268 CR 100, Carrollton, paid his fines of $300 in full prior to court for open container.

Bailey Welch, 40 Lake Dr., Grenada, failed to appear to answer an open container charge.

John Wadley, 1407 Haden, Oxford, entered a guilty plea to possession of marijuana in a vehicle. He was fined $620 and his license was suspended for six months.

Harvey Lynch, 18 Lynch Dr., Abbeville, entered a guilty plea to possession of marijuana in a vehicle. He was fined $620 and had his license suspended for six months.

Allison Johnson, 104 1/2 Gracie Cove, Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to simple assault. A trial was set for January 14.

She also had old fines of $340 that have been due since September 2009.

Jazmine Brown, 801-G Brittney Dr., Oxford, had a disorderly conduct case continued.

Frank Pryor, 324 Patton Lane, Batesville, entered not guilty pleas to disorderly conduct-failure conduct and resisting arrest.

Katrina Lawson, 85-A Lawson, Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to to domestic violence-simple and petit larceny. A trial was set for January 27.

Steven Chaffin, 1019 Birchwood, Jackson, entered a not guilty plea to petit larceny and malicious mischief. A trial was set for January 27.

Jessica Darby, 1465 King Rd., Sardis, entered a not guilty plea to shoplifting. A trial was set for January 20.

Cassandra Rudd, 1321-B Hentz Rd., Pope, entered a not guilty plea to shoplifting. A trial was set for February 3.

Donny D. Butts, 105 Browning St., Batesville, asked the judge for time to get a lawyer for DUI-refusal and careless driving. A trial was set for January 6.

Lawrence Caldwell, 201-B  Patton Lane, Batesville, had old fines of $631 that have been due since December 2008.

He failed to finish his number of days on the work program.

He was given a second chance to finish his 10 days on the city work program.

Casey Childs, 112 Martinez, Batesville, was fined $193 for no proof of insurance.

Michael Lee, 91-H Elbert Smith Rd., Batesville, was fined $167 for running a red light.

Bertha Mitchell, 330-A Ford Rd., Batesville, was fined $367 for driving while license suspended.

Connie L. Shegog, 207 Armstrong, Batesville, was fined $367 for driving while license suspended.

Cody W. Bradley, 815 Hule Hood, Sledge, was fined $152 for careless driving.

Gerick K. Chapman, 2454 Cotton Plant, was fined $491 for expired tag and no driver’s license.

Juanita Webb, 177 B Mt. Lever, Sardis, was fined $100 for expired tag.

Kevin Braziel, 3175 Robinson Rd., Jackson, was fined $367 for driving while license suspended.
