Drag race lands defendant on work program

A local teen was entered into the city’s work program for 21 days in lieu of paying a hefty fine for several driving citations during Batesville Municipal Court Wednesday.

Wesley M. Bullard, 699 Nelson Spur, Pope, was fined for disorderly conduct-failure to comply, reckless driving and drag racing on December 1.

He was also fined for driving while license suspended and improper turn on November 11 and careless driving and improper equipment on November 18.

Bullard told Judge Bill McKenzie he wasn’t exactly “drag racing.”

He explained that he never got over 60 miles per hour as he was driving his Mustang north on Hwy. 51 in Batesville.

The judge asked, “So it’s 5:30 in the afternoon and y’all are racing in the middle of town?”

Initial appearance

Danny Webster, 2585 Chapeltown, Courtland, entered a not guilty plea to disorderly conduct. A trial was set.

Michael Sanford, 511 Green Rd., Batesville, entered a guilty plea to possessing a weapon on school property.

He told the judge it was a misunderstanding because his backpack was in the lost and found and had a knife in it.

He was fined $540.

Jacqueline Tribble, 204-A  Lester, Batesville, had a disorderly conduct case continued.

Rickie Taylor, 12475 Hwy. 310 W, Como, entered a not guilty plea to domestic violence-simple, carrying a concealed weapon and malicious mischief.

A trial was set for January 27.

Rickey Jones, 1791 Gin Rd., Batesville, was fined $2,060 for shoplifting two steaks worth $22.37 from Piggly Wiggly, public drunk and false information.

“Drinking is not helping your problem; it is your problem,” McKenzie said.

Antonio Phillips, 1708 Broome Loop, Oxford, failed to appear to answer a shoplifting charge.

Demichael Norwood, 107 Magnolia, Sardis, failed to appear to answer a shoplifting charge. Alright Bonding Company was notified.

John Shipp, 53 Harris, Rd., Sardis, had a false pretense case withdrawn.

Affiant Brandi Grant works for Shipp at the Huddle House as a server.

She told the judge he withheld $16 from her check because her drawer was off a few times in the past.

Shipp told the judge Grant told him she did want to pay the balance of what was owed in the drawer.

The judge told the affiant it was a civil case not a criminal case.

Wilbourn Winters, was fined $640 for disturbance of a family and disorderly conduct-failure to comply.

Cases set for trial

Billie Fonville, 1098 Smart Rd., Como, was found not guilty of possession of marijuana in a vehicle.

Robert Anderson Jr., 760 Harmon Rd., Batesville, had a domestic violence-simple assault case remanded to the files.

The affiant, Angela Degroff failed to appear to prosecute.

Otis Ray, 11463 Tatum, Tillatoba, had a case continued for DUI-second (refusal), no seat belt, loud music, careless driving.

Oscar Cordova, 700 Dickinson, Memphis, had a case set for ruling after a long trial two weeks ago.

He was represented by Attorney Helen Kelly.

Judge McKenzie said it was proven beyond a reasonable doubt he was guilty of DUI-refusal, careless driving and open container.

He was found not guilty of possession of marijuana in a vehicle.

His total fines were $1,209.

Deondis K. Floyd, 107 MLK No. 30, Batesville, was fined $434 for no driver’s license and improper equipment.

Sidney L. Avant III, 2421 Nash Rd., Batesville, was fined $519 for careless driving and driving while license suspended.

Cheryl S. Singleton, 305 A. East, Batesville, was fined $392 for no proof of insurance and switched tag.

Clayton C. Sayles, 101 Public Square, was fined $142 driving on wrong side of road.
