Speaking of armed service, Ricky and Mike (left) Swindle were recently honored by Combined Task Force Builder with a flag that flew over headquarters on September 29 during Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq. The flag and statement of authenticity are on display at the family’s store at Eureka and Hwy. 6 and were presented by Sergeant Major William Brooks for “service and patriotism that has been with us throughout the battles and wars,” and signed by Commander Lt. Col. Terry Grisham and Command Sgt. Major Ronald Anderson. The Panolian photo by Rupert Howell

Ceremony Wednesday honors U.S. veterans

Panola Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4968 will honor veterans during a brief program Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. on the Batesville Downtown Square.

Post Commander Bobby Hudson said that everyone is urged to join the salute to honor the nation’s veterans, especially local veterans. The time and date of the observance — 11th month, 11th day, 11th hour is based on the Armistice that ended hostilities in World War I on November 11, 1918.

It was called Armistice Day and designated a legal holiday by Congress in 1938.

In 1954, after World War II and Korea, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day.

Wednesday’s observance will include the national anthem played by the South Panola High School Band, taps played by Spencer Van Dyke and the laying of a wreath at the memorial marker, Hudson said.

Batesville minister Robert Rawson will make brief remarks, the VFW Commander said.

I am so thankful for all of our veterans and their families. It takes special people to do the jobs that they do and I am so appreciative for their service. To our veterans who are serving overseas this Veteran's Day, know that we are praying for you daily and love all of you so very much! Thanks again for everything you do!
