Tuesdays On Tuesday afternoons Batesville Public Library is giving teens the use of the library’s large meeting room, where they can play games, have snacks and drinks from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. --a place where they won’t be asked to “shush.” PACE, a support group for family and friends of those suffering with mental illness, meets at 5:30 p.m. at the Batesville Church of Christ. Nov. 2 thru Dec. 1 Applications for families seeking help through the Panola County Secret Santa Project are available at public libraries in Batesville, Sardis, Como and Crenshaw. Applications should be filled out and left at the libraries. Nov. 6-7 Friends of the Library will sponsor their annual Book Sale at the Panola County Extension Building on Hwy. 51. Hours for the sale are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 8:30 a.m. -12 noon on Saturday. Books of all kinds, tapes, movies, cd’s and dvd’s are now being accepted at the library and can still be donated at the Extension Building on the day before the sale. The Boys and Girls Club will have a fish fry on Friday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Call to pre-order or come by the Batesville club. Sat., Nov. 7 The Coles Point Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary will sponsor the Coles Point Christmas Angels Pageant as a fund-raiser for the fire department. The South Panola DECA Beauty Review will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Batesville Jr. High Auditorium. Seventy contestants will be vying for the crowns of Most Beautiful and Most Photogenic. Using native plants in landscaping will be the topic of a program by Dr. Lelia Scott Kelly, consumer horticulture specialist for the Mississippi State University Extension Service, at the North Mississippi Fish Hatchery Visitor Education Center. Tues., Nov. 10 The Panola County Humane Society will meet at 5:15 p.m. at the Batesville Presbyterian Church. Anyone interested in helping with the Panola County Secret Santa Project may attend a meeting at 5:30 at Sardis Presbyterian Church.
Nov. 10, 11 Tri Lakes Medical Center Auxiliary will sponsor a jewelry sale from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Wed., Nov. 11 Panola Memorial V.F.W. Post 4968 will sponsor a Veterans Day observance at 11 a.m. A brief program will be presented at the Downtown Memorial Park, according to post commander Bobby Hudson. The Water Valley VFW plans a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at the memorial on Main Street in Water Valley. Immediately afterward veterans and guests will be served lunch at the VFW post. In case of rain, all activities will be held at the post. The Batesville Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting at 12 noon at the Public Library. Jennifer Flautt of Webb will present a program on miniature floral designs. Jennifer is a National Garden Clubs accredited flower show judge and a member of Plantation Garden Club. Hostesses will be Mary Jo Cook, Diana Green, Sherry Sullivan and Gayle Wadsworth. A Literacy Workshop will be conducted at the South Panola School District Parent Center, with sessions at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Seating is limited. Dr. Dolores Barnett will be the speaker. Members are asked to bring flour or sugar for the food pantry.
Thurs., Nov. 12 Twilight fans are invited to test their knowledge of the entire popular “vampire” series of novels in a trivia contest. Sign up at the Batesville Public Library beginning November 2. Contestants will participate in pairs, so you are encouraged to sign up with a friend. Contest is limited to ages 13 – 18 and the winners will each receive two passes to the opening night premiere of New Moon! Batesville Junior High School will issue progress reports.
Sat., Nov. 14 Boys 2 Men United will sponsor a community march at 10 a.m., starting at the Batesville Square and moving to the Church of God on Armstrong Street. The event will promote strong male leadership in the home and community, with the theme, “Taking Back Our Families,” according to organizer Earl Jones Jr. For more information contact Jones at 934-0986. Tues., Nov. 17 American Legion will meet in the conference room at the Batesville Public Library at 6 p.m. This meeting is very important discussing a fundraising project.
Sat., Nov. 21 Pick up all your Thanksgiving baked goods at Batesville Woman’s Club bake sale outside the Kroger store from 7 a.m. until noon. Featured will be homemade bread, pies, cakes, cookies, and candy. Delicious chocolate-covered pecans make great stocking stuffers or hostess gifts. A table of Christmas decorations and one-of-a-kind earrings will also be available.
Nov. 20-21 The Heflin House Museum’s Christmas Bazaar will feature baked goods, crafts, gift items and jewelry. The event opens at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served from 11:30 to 1 p.m. Cost for lunch is $8. The Heflin House Museum is located at 304 South Main Street in Sardis. Thurs., Dec. 3 North Delta School will present its annual Christmas Bazaar and program. The bazaar will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The program will be at 6 p.m.
Sun., Dec. 6 The Batesville Garden Club will present its Christmas Tour with three homes, a business and a church on display. Tickets, $10, are available at the door at each stop. Guests may tour in any order they choose. On the tour will be the homes of Mark Heafner, Bill and Renelda Burnett, and Stan and Melissa Sullivant, along with St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and the law offices of Charlie Baglan. Tues., Dec. 8 The Batesville Christmas Parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. and proceed through Downtown. The theme is “Let There Be Peace on Earth.” The rain date is Sunday, Dec. 13.
