Tax commission gives OK for restaurant beer sales

By Jason C. Mattox

Nearly three weeks after Batesville convenience stores and grocery stores gained the ability to sell beer on Sundays, Batesville restaurants will be allowed to start selling beer and liquor on Sundays as well.

Aldermen voted October 15 to allow convenience and grocery store sales for off-premises consumption between the hours of noon and 10 p.m. and to allow beer and liquor sales in restaurants between the hours of 2 p.m. - 10 p.m.

The on-premises consumption of beer, wine and liquor was delayed because it required approval of the Mississippi State Tax Commission.

According to assistant city attorney Colmon Mitchell, the sale of beer could have been allowed for on-premises consumption but aldermen tied the beer into an ordinance with liquor and wine, and approval of the state tax commission was required.

City Clerk Laura Herron said she was notified of the tax commission’s approval Wednesday.

“The restaurants can begin selling this Sunday,” she said.

This decision concludes a process that began in September when aldermen initially proposed Sunday sales. According to figures presented during an August meeting, the allowance of Sunday sales should provide an additional $100,000 in annual revenue for the city.

Despite the estimated revenue, aldermen failed to reach a unanimous decision with on premises consumption passing 3-1, with alderman Bill Dugger being the nay vote.

Alderman Stan Harrison did not vote on the matter due to a potential conflict of interest.

IT IS BAD ENOUGH THAT I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MY DAUGHTER SEEING A DRUNK WHEN WE GO OUT TO EAT DURING THE WEEK, NOW I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT ON SUNDAY AS WELL. I SURE HOPE WITH ALL DRINKING GOING ON EVERY DAY, NONE OF THE FAMILY MEMBERS OF THE PEOPLE WHO VOTED TO PASS THIS GET KILLED BY A DRUNK DRIVER.THANKS BILL DUGGER FOR BEING AGAINST THIS, TO BAD OTHERS CAN'T SEE THE WRONG IN THIS. GOD HELP WITH US ALL

For the record, I do not drink, BUT since when does having a drink on Sunday make anyone a drunk? Do you really believe nobody drank on Sunday before this resolution? I am pretty sure you and anyone else for or against this will reap in the benefits of added revenue to this county.

Cracker Barrell does not serve beer. Why do you go to a restaurant with your child that serves alcohol in the first place? If you want to stand by your morals then stop supporting places that serve alcohol and go to those that don't. I eat out a lot and really don't see many drunks in restaurants that serve liquor, altough I do see lots of parents with their kids sitting in bars eating. When you bring your child to a bar to eat, what do you expect to see . . A magic show?

Yea, because drunk drivers are the ONLY threat to society. Right?

Maybe you should cook for your kids instead of cramming them full of Chili's!

Speaking as someone who met my wife over a glass of wine...as someone who attended lots of college football games with all of those non-drinking, yet inebriated, fans clanging their cowbells or waving their flags as they screamed for their team...and as an old man who worries about every new generation in my family that has followed my own, let me say this. I'd be more concerned about my daughter or son seeing not the drunk sprawled across the table but the refined church-going woman or man who has that little cocktail after supper every night. I'm more worried about the overly protective parent who valiantly tries to teach his/her children that all alcoholics are the ones who get knee-walking drunk on Saturday night but ignore the fact that the most insidious form of alcoholism is the drinker who hides behind the doors of their home and loves the flavor of peach schnappes so much that she will go through a couple of bottles per week. The falling down drunk is repulsive and doesn't require a lot of "teaching"...but the one who makes it appear that drinking every day is o.k. is, to me, more dangerous. People who drink in restaurants aren't trying to deceive anyone...much less themselves.

Ok well, I just love how people want to pass judgement. It seems that someone always has to have something to complain about. That is what is wrong with our country now. I have seen a lot of so called Christians passing judgement on this website lately. It doesn't matter what day beer is sold on if you forget what a true Christian is. They are going to find the alcohol somewhere no matter what. So why sit and say things like that. Go back to church or read your Bible again because what you just said is very un Christian!
