Snow in March?
On March 21-22, 1968 a snowstorm blew into North Mississippi with accumulations up to umpteen inches according to those who survived to exaggerate the story. Question is: Do you think we will experience snowfall with accumulation this March?

James T. “Bud” Bolen

BATESVILLE-- James T. “Bud” Bolen, 74, died Saturday, January 10, 2009, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

Services are today at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be in Blackjack Cemetery. Ron Bartlett, Bishop John Tait and Paul Roberts will officiate. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Bolen, born Feb. 19, 1939, to the lateCharles T. and Vernie Berry Bolen in Springville, was a retired route salesman for Wonder and Colonial Bread Companies. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Oxford.

Survivors include: his wife, Peggy Jean Stroupe Bolen of Batesville; one daughter, Peggy Jean Stroupe Bolen of Batesville; one daughter, Vicki Bolen Aldison and husband, Certy of Batesville; two sons, Keith Bolen Aldison and wife, Lisa of Crowder and Kevin Bolen and wife, Jennifer of New Albany; two sisters, Jane Bolen Hayzieh of Crenshaw and Patsy Bolen Barnett of Sardis; three brothers, William Bolen of Southaven, Gary Bolen of Water Valley and Wayne Bolen of Crenshaw and seven grandchildren, Brooke Bolen, Tyler Bolen, Morgan Aldison, Robert Aldison, Loden Bolen, Luke Bolen and Jeb Bolen.


Catherine Armstrong Burchfield

BATESVILLE-- Catherine Armstrong Burchfield, 81, died Saturday, January 10, 2009, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services were Monday at Wells Funeral Home. Burial was in Clarksdale Memorial Gardens. Michael Bates officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Burchfield, born June 25, 1927, to the late Edgar Armstrong and Annie Irene Armstrong, in Jackson, was a retired teacher from Lee Academy and a member of the Church of Christ. She was a graduate of Central High School in 1944 and later received a bachelor of arts degree from Milsaps College in education.

Survivors include: one son, John Burchfield and his wife, Jena of Batesville and two grandchildren, Chris and Matt Burchfield.


Ossie J. Henderson

BATESVILLE-- Ossie J. Henderson, 90, died Friday, January 9, 2008, at her residence.

Services are Wednesday at 1 p.m. at New Hope M.B. Church. Rev. Richard Brown will officiate. Family hour will be 11 a.m. until service time at the church. Visitation is today 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Henderson, born Dec. 6, 1918, to the late Cley Joiner and Baby Ruth Robertson, attended school in Panola County. She was a member of New Hope M.B. Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Baby Ruth Henderson of Batesville and Lizzie Ruth Brassell of Oxford; one son, Willie W. Henderson of New Port, Va.; one sister, Clara Wilson of Memphis; 18 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.


Lynn Jones McCullar

BATESVILLE-- Lynn Jones McCullar, 61, died Sunday, January 11, 2009, at her residence.

Visitation for Lynn Jones McCullar will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Wells Funeral Home Chapel followed by burial in the Batesville Magnolia Cemetary.

McCullar, 61, died suddenly at her home in Batesville early Sunday morning, January 11, 2009. She was the daughter of the late William and Virginia Herron Jones. Survivors include her son, Tripp McCullar.

Additional funeral information will be posted online at www.panolian.com and a complete obituary will be published in the Friday print edition. Wells Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

McCullar was born March 11, 1947.


Dr. Frank H. McGregor

OAKLAND-- Dr. Frank H. McGregor Jr., 70, passed away Friday, January 9, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital of North Mississippi.

Services were Sunday at Wells Funeral Home. Burial was in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Pope. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

 Dr. McGregor, who made his home most recently in Oakland, was born March 19, 1938 in New Orleans, La. to the late Frank and Louise Mayo McGregor.

He was a surgeon who was trained at Duke University Medical School and Tulane University Medical School.

Dr. McGregor served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Vietnam from 1966-1967 and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Later he worked as clinical director at Lolley Kemp Charity Hospital in Independence, La., chief of surgery at St. Francis Medical Center and chief of surgery at North Monroe Community Hospital. He worked in private practice of general, thoracic and vascular surgery from 1974-1994, when he retired.

 Dr. McGregor received a bachelor’s degree from Duke University in zoology, a master’s from Duke in microbiology and a medical degree from Duke.  He served a surgical residency at Tulane University School of Medicine .

He was a member of The Southern Medical Association, Society of Abdominal Surgeons, La. State Medical Society, Ouachita Parish Medical Society, Alpha Omega Alpha, American Board of Surgery, Fellow American College of Surgeons, Fellow Tulane Surgical Society, Fellow Southeast Surgical Congress and was also a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Grenada.

Survivors include: his wife of 28 years Ava Patricia Carvan; two daughters, Holly J. McGregor Zakos and son-in-law, Stephen Zakos, of Emmaus, Pa. and Sarah McGregor Atteberry of Pearl and two grandsons, Ian McGregor Zakos and Miles McGregor Zakos. The family requests that memorials be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.


James Robert “Jim” Pratt

POPE-- James Robert “Jim” Pratt, 83, died Saturday, January 10, 2009.

Services were Monday at Bates, Cooper, Sloan Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, Texas. Memorial services will be today at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, Texas. Memorial services will also be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Pope Baptist Church. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home has charge of local arrangements.

Pratt, born July 2, 1925, in Pope, to the late James and Viola Pratt, graduated from Pope High School in 1943. He served with the 245th Engineers Combat Battalion in World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.

Following his return from the service, he graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in engineering. He worked for 35 years as a safety engineer for St. Paul Insurance Company in Jackson, Slidell, Louisiana and Houston, Texas.

He served many years as a deacon and was involved in mission work of the Baptist Church. He gave of his time and resources to many philanthropic activities, including service in construction teams, building churches and homes in the U.S. and in Mexico. He also served as a volunteer at Titus Regional Hospital in Mount Pleasant.

Survivors include: his wife of 56 years, Gwen Warren Pratt; one daughter, Lou Ann Pratt McLaughlin and husband, Michael of Houston, Texas; two sons, Edward L. Pratt and wife, Lynn of Edmond, Oklahoma and James Warren Pratt and wife Alma Doll of Plano, Texas;  three brothers, Larry Pratt and Hunter Pratt, both of Batesville and Martin Pratt of Mission, Texas; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Pope Baptist Church of Chapel Hill Cemetery Association Trust at First Security Bank.


Robinson Tillman Winburn

BATESVILLE-- Robinson Tillman Winburn, 88, died Saturday, January 10, 2009, at Graceland Assisted Living Center in Oxford.

Private services were Monday at Rosemark Cemetery in Rosemark, Tenn. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Winburn, born June 10, 1920, in Kerrville, Tenn., to the late Vagar T. and Nancy J. Spence Wilburn, was a civil servant at Millington Airforce Base. He was a veteran of WWII and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Associate Presbyterian Church in Rosemark.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Virginia Wylie Winburn.

Survivors include: one daughter, Jan Winburn Gole of Batesville; one son, Phillip A. Winburn of Huntsville, Ala.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
