E.H. Avent

SARDIS–– E.H. Avent, 88, passed away, June 18, 2016, at Baptist Desoto Hospital in Southaven, MS. Mr. Avent is the widower of the late Amaryllis Fair Avent of Senatobia.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2016 in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with interment to follow in Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville. The family will receive friends from 12 noon Wednesday until service time.
E.H. was born October 31, 1927 to the late William Avent and Hadye Haley Avent in Quitman County. E.H. worked for 30 plus years as a heavy equipment operator for Tennessee Gas.
He was a former full-time fireman for the Clarksdale Fire Department. During his lifetime E.H. enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved to travel. He loved old Western movies and visiting with friends. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Senatobia, MS.
Those left behind to cherish his memory include his son, William E. Avent (Reda) of Senatobia, and sister, Jo Ann Lee of Hernando.

Katie Murphree Brewer, 79, passed away Thursday evening, June 16, 2016, at her home in Union. Brewer is the widow of the late Charles R. “Bob” Brewer.
Funeral services for Mrs. Brewer  were held Sunday, June 19, 2016, in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home.  Interment followed at Forrest Memorial Park.
Katie, born August 9, 1936, in Panola County, to the late Hafford and Ethel Sandidge Murphree, was a member of the First Baptist Church in Batesville, and also in Union. Katie worked a number of years for Delta State University in the business office. When she wasn’t working, Katie enjoyed working in her yard and flower beds. Her most joyful times came while spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left behind to cherish her memory include her daughter, Valorie Brewer Westbrook (Ronnie) of Decatur; son, Charles Randall “Randy” Brewer (Malia) of Batesville; sister, Glenda Scoggins of Richland; brother, Loamie Murphree of Batesville; four grandchildren, Warren Hastings Westbrook (Krystal), Robert Bailey Westbrook (Rachel), Matthew Tyler Brewer (Whitney), Amanda Jean Brewer; three great-grandchildren, Anna Kate Westbrook, Willow June Brewer and Laya Claire Westbrook.

Barnard Haynes

JACKSON––Barnard Haynes, died Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at Merit Health in Raymond. Services were Sunday at New Rock Hill Church in Sardis. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Henderson Funeral Home had charge.
Haynes, born July 3, 1962, in Sardis, to Frank Haynes Sr. and Alice Trammell Haynes, attended North Panola School and was self employed.

Henry Hamilton

SARDIS––Henry Hamilton, 74, died Thursday, June 9, 2016, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.
Services were held Saturday at Pleasant Green Missionary Baptsit Church in Sardis. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Hamilton was born April 5, 1942, in Panola, to the late Robert Hamilton and Queen Ramsey Hamilton.

Lucille May Wood

Lucille May Wood, 100 years old, passed away on Friday, June 17, 2016, at Sardis Community Nursing Home in Sardis.
Services were held Sunday at Dickins Funeral Home. Interment followed at Memorial Park Cemetery in Batesville. Memorial contributions may be sent to First Baptist Church, 104 Panola Ave., Batesville, MS 38666. Dickins Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
She was born on May 6, 1916, in Belen to Lillian Piatt Wood and Charlie Wood. During WWII she worked at Fisher Aircraft in Memphis, building rudders for B-25 airplanes. Later she resided in Batesville where she raised her family. She and her late husband owned and operated W&W Appliances, until the store closed and she continued to work for Fashion Outlet. She worked part-time at Beverly Nursing Home until she was 88 years old. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Batesville, since 1954.
Mrs. Wood is survived by one daughter, Wanda Faye McMahon (Donald) of Delhi, La.; three sons, E.J. Douglas of Memphis; W.C. “Jack” Douglas (Genny) of Summit, and John M. “Buddy” Douglas (Theresa) of Batesville; one sister, Dot Brown of Jackson, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, John Douglas and Waldo H. Wood; her parents, Lillian Piatt Wood and Charlie Wood; two sisters Mary King and Arthenia Cavaness and three brothers, Lowell Wood, C.R. Wood and M.J. Wood.

Kenny Thornburg

Kenny Thornburg, AKA “Cornbread”died Friday, June 17, 2016, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis.
He was born October 24, 1962 in Rockford, Ill. to the late Johnnie and Donna Hada Thornburg.
Kenny was an avid Indiana Colts fan who enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing, NASCAR racing and playing with his dog “Boo-Boo”.
 He was a fun-loving person and always the “life of the party”. Kenny was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 pm at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Bro. Justin Gates officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Crest Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Water Valley with Scott Alexander, Billy Lamb, Erick Lamb, Lamar Cummings, Emmett Cook and Robert Golden serving as pallbearers. Jim Davis will serve as honorary pallbearer.
Kenny is survived by his wife, Regina Thornburg of Water Valley, MS; two step-daughters, Jennifer Hall (Jimmy) of Longtown and Michelle McCulloch of Sarah; two step-sons, Dale (Brooke) Lamb of Longtown, and Daniel Lamb, Jr. (Ethel) of Crenshaw; two sisters, Lisa (William Frank) McCool of Southaven and Debra (Donald) Corder of Roscoe, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
