ND softball wins first round, but lose second


The North Delta Lady Green Wave softball team opened up the MAIS North AAA State tournament Saturday morning at Cleveland’s Bear Pen Park with a 13-0 five-inning shutout of Manchester Academy.

North Delta (13-7-1) advanced to the quarterfinal round Monday morning against Leake Academy who blanked Kirk 1-0 in a first-round matchup. The championship game was slated for last night with the top four teams advancing to the State AAA tournament at Shiloh Park in Brandon beginning Saturday.

The Lady Wave made quick work of Manchester by scoring four runs in the second and seven in the third before adding two in fourth.

Haley Lamm paced  North Delta with three hits followed by Ginger Stephens and Myles Durham registering two each. Janie Brasell drove in three runs in the winning cause while Stephens and Sarah Johnson added two RBI’s.

Johnson picked up the pitching win by allowing one hit and striking out 14 batters.
Monday games

North Delta lost the first game Monday against Leake Academy 5-0. Leake scored all five runs in the seventh inning.

The Lady Wave dropped to the losers bracket where they immediately had to play against Riverfield, La. and won 5-1. Johnson struck out 17 batters.

The next game was against Kirk Academy which was not finished at press time.

The Lady Wave had two or three more games to win to claim the North State title. A win in the next game in the series will earn them a berth in the state championship starting this weekend.
