Charlotte Twilley Ball
HERNANDO––Charlotte Twilley Ball, 90, formerly of Batesville, died Friday, May 22, 2015, died Friday, May 22, 2015, at Wesley Meadows Retirement Community in Hernando.

Services were held Sunday in the chapel of Pate-Jones Funeral Home. Presiding was her grandson-in-law, Rev. Chip Gresham of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Independence, her grandson Rev. Chris Twilley of Senatobia, MS, and Rev. Greg Hurt of Highland Baptist Church in Senatobia.

Ball,  graduate of the Nazareth School of Nursing in Lexington, Ky, was a former member of Highland Baptist Church in Senatobia, and First Baptist Church of Red Bay, Ala.,
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Stanley Ball of Lexington, Ky.
Survivors include: two stepsons, Robert and Charles Ball of Lexington. Widowed in 1974 by Virgal “Pete” Twilley of Arkabutla, she leaves a daughter, Rachel Taylor (Milton) of Coldwater, three sons, Richard Twilley (Sheila) of Vina, Ala., Paul Twilley of Brandon, Joe Twilley (Phyllis) of Senatobia, 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Wayland Bernard Bownes
SARDIS––Wayland Bernard Bownes, 31, died Tuesday, May 26, 2015, after injuries received from gunshot wounds.

Services will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Melvin Ellis will officiate. Burial will be in Macedonia Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary.

Bownes, born Aug. 28, 1984, in Greenville, to the late James Bownes Jr. and Dortha Caldwell Bownes, was self employed in lawn management.

Survivors include: two daughters, Kierra Bownes of Acworth, Ga. and Malaya Smith of Batesville; one brother, Patrick Bownes of Batesville and three sisters, Felicia Bownes of Batesville, Tamu Reed of Jackson and Teresa Pegues of Slidell, La.

Glenna Marcella Bigney Collier
BATESVILLE––Glenna Marcella Bigney “Nana” Collier, 92, died Thursday, May 21, 2015, at Golden Living Center.

Graveside services with family and friends were held Tuesday at Magnolia Cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Collier, born June 30, 1922, in Batesville, Ind., to the late Lorena Anna Neufarth and Walter Lemuel Bigney, graduated high school at the age of 16. She was the secretary of Batesville Elementary School for over 33 years. She attended Littleford Business School where she studied shorthand, typing and bookkeeping. While living in Cincinnati she was one of the first women to play the piano on the radio. She worked at the Health Department in Batesville and Batesville Sales Barn. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. She loved Boston Terriers and red birds.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jimmy” Edward Collier, who died at age 33, and one daughter, Patti Cheryl Collier Pepper.

Survivors include: two daughters, Pam Womble (Charlie) of Lebanon, Tenn., Penny Briscoe of Batesville and one son, Jim Collier (Christy) of Batesville and grandchildren, James David “Tripp” Pepper III and Kim Briscoe Carver, both of Batesville; Kristen Sisemore (Ryan) of Brentwood, Tenn., Keri Cochran (Craig) of Franklin, Tenn. and Ashley Brock (Adam) of Midland City, Ala. and her great-grandchildren, CiCi Carver, Coee Carver and Cella Carver, all of Batesville; Griffin, Zoe Belle, Elam, Evie Claire, Aubrey and Caelin.

Memorials may be made to Batesville Elementary School or the Panola County Humane Society.

Cecil Troy Darby
BATESVILLE––Cecil Troy Darby, 67, died Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services were held Wednesday at Dickins Funeral Home. Hal C. Johnson officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Darby, born Oct. 7, 1947, in Batesville, to the late Brinkley Howard Darby Sr. and Laverne Martin Darby, was a member and pastor of Enid Church of Christ and the Sardis Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include: one daughter, Ashley Darby Cecerre (Tony) of Batesville; two sons, Scott Darby (Amanda) of Water Valley and Jeffery Alexander (Jennifer) of Southaven; two brothers, David Darby (Teresa) Columbus and Gary Darby (Tracy) of Olive Branch; five grandchildren, Will Coleman, Mary Leigh Coleman, Gavin Darby, Ashlyn Darby and Payton Darby.

Betty Jean and William Guest
MEMPHIS––Mr. William Sherrell Guest, 85, and his wife, Mrs. Betty Jean Ware Guest, 84,  died within hours of each other, Monday, May 18, 2015 in Memphis.

The services for both were held Thursday, May 21, 2015 at at Wells Funeral Home in Batesville. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park.

Sherrell was born February 24, 1930 to Stanley Guest and Julia Pritchard Guest in Yalobusha County. He was the plant manager for Unarco in Memphis and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. 

Betty was born January 25, 1930 to Jacob Ware and Sabie Pinkston Ware in Carroll County, was the V.P. for Jack Morris Auto Glass for 45 years in Memphis. Both were members of Grace United Methodist Church. 

Survivors include Sherrell’s two sisters, Barbara Agee (Billy) of Southaven, and Janie Boswell (Bob) of Cordova. Betty’s brother, Tony Ware of Batesville; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

William Phillip Lawson
COLUMBUS––William Phillip Lawson, 63, died Saturday, May 23, 2015, at his residence.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Concord M.B. Church on Curtis Road in Batesville. Eric Martin will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Lawson was born Jan. 17, 1952, in Batesville, to the late Willie Lawson and Bessie Harris Lawson.

Survivors include: one daughter, Latoyna Lawson; six sisters, Willie Pride of Covington, Tenn., Stella Griffin, Easter Rayford and Earlie Mae Lawson, all of Batesville, Pauline Dowdy of Memphis and Josephine Drane of Henning, Tenn.

Reco Demond Leland
BATESVILLE––Reco Demond Leland, 27, died Tuesday, May 26, 2015, in Courtland from gunshot wounds.

Services will be held Tuesday at Mt. Zion M.B. Church. Visitation will be held Monday, June 1 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary.

Leland, born Oct. 10, 1987, in Batesville, to Barney Young and Margaret Leland, was a member of Mt. Zion M.B. Church. Full obituary information was  not available at press time.

John Clinton Prince
BATESVILLE––John Clinton Prince, 75, died Sunday, May 24, 2015, at his residence.

Services were held Thursday at Wells Funeral Home. Burial was in Pisgah Cemetery. Father Sam Messina officiated. Prince, born July 31, 1939, to the late Lemiual Prince and Pauline Karr Prince, worked as a contractor and was a member of Orwood Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Regina Gail Prince Jones and Rene Haire.
Survivors include: his wife, Patricia Jean Crouch Prince of Batesville; one daughter, Susan Cook of Batesville; one sister, Sue Carwyle of Oxford; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
