Jennifer Christine “Chris” Beall Cobb

Jennifer Christine “Chris” Beall Cobb, age 43, passed away Thursday afternoon, April 23, 2015 at her home in Batesville, MS.

The family will be having a private family committal service Sunday, April 26, 2015, with the family receiving friends afterwards at Wells Funeral Home from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. On Monday, April 27, 2015, the family will also receive friends 10:00 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Oxford, MS with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 A.M. The Reverend John Semmes will be officiating the services.

Chris was born December 28, 1971 in Columbia, MS to Dudley and Harriet Beasley Beall. She was a graduate of South Panola High School and went on to receive her Masters Degree in Special Education from The University of Mississippi. Chris taught special education form several years in the Lafayette County School and South Panola School Districts. Following her teaching career, she took great pride in being the head of her household and especially caring for her father. Chris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oxford, MS

Chris’ loving memory will live on with her husband, Trey Cobb of Batesville, MS; parents, Dudley and Harriet Beasley Beall; mother and father-in-law, Clifford and Daphene Cobb of Lambert, MS; three nieces, Maddy Handy, Sadie Cobb, Charlotte Cobb; and one nephew, Jake Handy.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Beall, and one brother, Carlisle Beall.

Nellie Mae Crowder


CHARLESTON–Nellie Mae Crowder, 71, died Monday, April 20, 2015, at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville.

A native of Tippo, she was the daughter of Willie Green and Mozella Green. She was a member of Morning Star Church of God in Christ in Tippo where she was president of the usher board. She was a retired teacher for ICS Headstart after 42 years of service. She was the widow of Walter Crowder Sr.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at Morning Star COGIC in Tippo. Elder Robert Chambers will officiate. Burial will be in Sharkey Cemetery in Tippo. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Batesville is in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by two daughters – Mae Nellie Green-Crowder of Madison, WI and Rachel Annell Crowder-Cooper of Charleston; three sons – Walter Crowder Jr. and Rayvon Darnell Crowder, both of Charleston, and Terry Dewayne Crowder of Holcomb; seven sisters – Nancy Mae Adams of Tippo, Teresa Parker of Omaho, NE, Lois Slater of Chicago, Doris Smith, Clara Henry, Verna Thompson and Annie Shaw all of Springfield, IL; six brothers – James Robinson, Dennis Green and Michael Green all of Springfield, IL, Van Housley of Chicago, Willie Housley and Melvin Green both of Charleston; sixteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Richard Jones

CRENSHAW–Richard Jones, 65, died April 20 at Regional One Medical Center in Memphis. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph M.B. Church in Crenshaw. J.C. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in New McNeal Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Friday at Cooley’s Mortuary from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Born May 24, 1949 in Hencliff to Sam and Gertrude Jones, he was a retired employee of the Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Company. He was a member of New McNeal M.B. Church.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Jones of Crenshaw; five sons, Tillman Rushing of Nashville, Amos Washington of Robinsonville, Kevin Rushing of Atlanta, Chadwick Carter of Tunica, Tracy Rushing of Batesville; four daughters, Bernice Washington of Tunica, Angela Rushing of Atlanta, Ethel Mae Morehead of Memphis and Everlean Harrell of Como; 12 brothers, 14 sisters, 28 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Robert Hudson

BATESVILLE–James Hudson, age 82, passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 22, 2015, at Tri-lakes Medical Center in Batesville, MS.

Funeral services for Mr. Hudson will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Hebron Baptist Church in Sardis, MS. Interment will be at Magnolia Cemetery, Batesville, MS. Reverend Terry Triblle will officiate the services. The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 at Wells Funeral Home on Friday evening, April 24, 2015.

Bobby was born to Robert and Mary Barker Hudson on September 3, 1932, in Panola County, Mississippi. He proudly served his country during the Korean War in the Air Force as a Airman, 2nd Class. After 28 years Mr. Hudson retired as a Detective for the City of Memphis Police.

During his life Mr. Bobby was deeply involved in many religious and civic organizations. Notably, he was the past President of the Methodist Men’s Club, speaker and member of the Gideon’s International, Deacon at Hebron Baptist Church, member of the Prison Ministry and also a member of the Retired Police Association. Mr. Hudson was a member of the Hebron Baptist Church.

Those who Bobby leaves behind to cherish his blessed memory include his wife of sixty-one years; Lorene Foster Hudson of Sardis, MS, three sons; Richard Hudson (Robin), James Carlton Hudsonn (Jeannie), Douglas Foster Hudson (Christy), four grandchildren; Dexter Hudson, Nick Hudson, Matthew Hudson, Dalton Hudson, two great-grandchildren; Caleb Hudson, Destiny Hudson.

Besides his parents, Mr. Hudson was preceded in death by his sister; Nell Hudson Bagley, and brother; John “Big John” Hudson

The family ask that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Mr. Bobby’s honor to the Gideons International or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital


Robert Troy Landis

BATESVILLE–Robert Troy Landis, age 50, passed away at his home on April 21, 2015.

The family will hold a memorial celebration on Saturday, April 25 at 2 p.m. at the home of Jeff Landis, 351 Forrest Drive North, Sardis.

Mr. Landis was born to Linda and Willard T. Landis in Eaton, Ohio on July 2, 1964.

Survivors include his wife, Angie White Landis, of Batesville; one daughter, Robin Landis of Batesville; his father, Willard T. Landis of Nesbit; one sister, Tracie Milam of Nesbit; one brother, Jeff Landis of Sardis; one grandson.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Shilts Landis.

Dewitt Nelson

COMO–Dewitt Nelson, 65, died April 15, 2015 at Regional One Medical Center in Memphis. He was a construction worker.

Funeral services will be Saturday, April 25, at 1 p.m. at Felix Cauthen Funeral Home Chapel in Senatobia. Burial will be in Cistern Hill M.B. Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Survivors include a son, Dewitt Brown of Chicago; two sisters, Annie Lee Lewis of Senatobia and Trenita Harber of Memphis; two brothers, Melvin Jones and Stanley Jones, both of Senatobia; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Cecil Smith

BATESVILLE–Cecil Wayne Smith, age 63, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at his home.

Funeral services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Michael Bates officiated. Interment was at Forrest Memorial Park in Batesville. 

Born February 5, 1952 to the late Phillip Marvin Smith and Lorraine Wagner Smith in Greenwood,  Smith owned his own welding business, Smith Welding and Maintenance, and worked on and off for Tri-Star Mechanical for 18 years. He served in the U.S. Marines, obtaining the rank of Lance Corporal. He was a member of the Batesville Church of Christ. 

Survivors include his wife, Pat Aldison Smith, of Batesville; two sons, Hunter Smith of Greenwood and Nathan Smith of Oxford; two stepsons, Clay Goodwin of Greenwood and Adam Goodwin of Batesville; two sisters, Ann Karlean Rohl of Martinsville, Ind., and Dawn Terrazas Chambers of Houston, Texas; three brothers, Phillip Smith of Batesville, Trent Smith of Batesville, and Barry Smith of Southaven; and three grandchildren.
