Supervisors voted 3-2 during last Monday’s First District meeting in Sardis to assist Quitman County with approximately two miles of reseal following completion of paving and reseal projects in Panola County this summer.

Supervisors Cole Flint and John Thomas voted against the request brought to the board by Panola County Road Manager Lygunnah Bean.

Panola County County Road Department has previously done work in Quitman County with that entity paying a per mile fee for use of equipment and labor.

Bean also noted that work on the parking lot at Batesville Courthouse was underway with leveling work being done prior to asphalt being put down at the back of the facility where the former jail was located.

Dirt is being moved there and temporarily being stored on the west side of Dunlap Stadium parking lot.

Bean also received permission to haul 15-20 loads of gravel to North Panola High School football field parking lot.

Supervisors accepted both bids, Waste Management and Three Rivers, for landfill sites to dump Panola County’s solid waste.

Three Rivers, located in Pontotoc County, was chosen as the first bid with Waste Management in Tunica County as the alternate although the Waste Management bid appeared less expensive.

County Administrator Kelley Magee explained that conditions at the Tunica site may have contributed to numerous flat tires that slowed the service, although that facility was much more accessible when trucks were running in the north part of the county.

She also explained that the county needed an alternate site when one or the other was closed for different reasons.

Supervisors voted to move forward with imminent domain proceedings on property adjacent to the Lawrence Bros. Road bridge in southeast Panola County that is in need of repair.

Supervisor John Thomas made the motion to proceed with Attorney Bill McKenzie reminding the board that property appraisals would be involved for landowners who would be affected.

“It ain’t worth nothing if it doesn’t have a bridge to get to it,” Thomas said prior to making the motion to proceed.
