Snow in March?
On March 21-22, 1968 a snowstorm blew into North Mississippi with accumulations up to umpteen inches according to those who survived to exaggerate the story. Question is: Do you think we will experience snowfall with accumulation this March?

Sardis board gets on code clean up mission

By Rupert Howell
Sardis Mayor Billy Russell stepped up to the soapbox Tuesday night and let it be known that cleanup was on the way—and not just the dirt and grime type.

Sardis City Attorney Tommy Shuler brought to the meeting several binders of ordinances and regulations—so many in fact that nobody can know what all is included, Russell said at Tuesday night’s monthly meeting.

Board members later in executive session voted to hire a part-time code enforcement officer who would first study the binders of ordinances and then make recommendations to combine, amend, eliminate or  clean up those not deemed necessary. The streamlining of city codes and ordinance would be accompanied by strict enforcement.

Russell said later that the new enforcement officials would work with the town’s maintenance supervisor Bubba McDowell to assist with cleanup and enforcement.

Russell’s declaration came after the Sardis Historic Preservation Commission member Dale Hart gave his verbal resignation stating his time would now be devoted to the Sardis Chamber of Commerce where he now serves as president.

With only two members remaining on that Commission, Russell said he would be for dissolving the commission and attaining their goals through other means.

Russell explained that the city’s need to maintain and grow sometimes conflict with the Historical Commission, codes and ordinances.

“When I first got elected I wanted to clean up, bring buildings to code,” Russell said. “We’ve got two binders (full) and some more. Nobody has ever tried to enforce ordinances. I want to start enforcing them. . . We’ve got to have somebody to put teeth into it (code enforcement.)”
