Snow in March?
On March 21-22, 1968 a snowstorm blew into North Mississippi with accumulations up to umpteen inches according to those who survived to exaggerate the story. Question is: Do you think we will experience snowfall with accumulation this March?

Thursday, January 23
Lunch and Learn Gardening Series - will be available by interactive video conference at the Cliff Finch County Office Building at 245 Eureka Street, Batesville, 12:05-1 p.m.  This month’s topic will be “Cool-Season Vegetables.” This program will cover all aspects of growing the early season garden.  For more information, call Panola County Extension Service at 563-6260.
A meeting sponsored by Saving Our Sons will be hosted at the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest  Mississippi at 6:30 p.m.

A weight management support group meets with a registered dietitian from the University of Mississippi’s Nutrition Clinic at 6 p.m. in the South Panola High School library. The group meets monthly, is open to anyone in the community and is offered free of charge.

January 24-25
The UKC Winter Classic  coon hunt and bench show will be held at the Batesville Civic Center. About 1,000 coonhounds, with their owners and handlers, are expected from all over the country. The public is welcome to observe events at the Civic Center. Admission is free. Activities begin around 9 a.m. both days and stretch well into the night, as handlers and hounds return from hunting.

Tuesday, January 28

Panola County Extension Service  is hosting an AARP Smart Driver Class from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m., at the Panola County Extension Building, located at 394 Highway 51 South in Batesville.  Cost is $15 for AARP members or $20 for non-members. To register call the office at 662-563-6260.
South Panola Parent Center will present a workshop, “Parents and Students Living a Healthy Lifestyle,” to be presented by Marie C. Howard, RN, BSN, LSW Community Relations Coodinator, St. Francis Hospital.
Sessions will be held at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Contact Dianne Wiley at  563-6044 for any additional information.

Friends of the Library will meet at noon at the Batesville Public Library. Participants should bring a sack lunch.

Tuesday, February 4
Mobile Food Pantry from the Mid-South Food Bank will be delivering food at Cistern Hill Church from 1-3 p.m. Recipients must have been pre-screened. Call 662-526-5256 for information about screening dates in Sardis and Como. The delivery is sponsored by the North Panola Church Collaborative.

Saturday, February 8
Step Off Stepshow will be sponsored at North Panola High School at 6 p.m. Admission is $10. Proceeds will benefit the school. For information call 292-2531.

Registration for Pre-K at Batesville Elementary School will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
To be eligible, a child must be age 4 by Sept. 1, 2014. Parents must bring: certified birth certificate, immunization compliance form, social security card, two proofs of residency, proof of medical insurance, proof of income for 2013. Call 563-4596 for information.

Sunday, February 16
The 2014 Little Miss Batesville Pageant will be held at 2 p.m. at the Batesville Junior High auditorium. Girls ages 4-6 on the date of the pageant are eligible. Contestants must live in the South Panola School District.

ServSafe Food Certification Class will be taught at 7:30 a.m. The certification exam will begin around 4 p.m. and should be completed by 6 p.m.  The class will be held at the Yalobusha County Extension Service.  Cost of the course is $135.  The deadline to register is February 10.  Call Pamela Redwine at 662-675-2730 to register.

The Election Commissioners meet the first Wednesday of each month at the Batesville Courthouse at 9 a.m.

Batesville Luncheon Civitans will meet every first and third Thursday of the month at Western Sizzlin’ in Batesville from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.
The Panola County Tea Party meets the second Thursday each month at 7 p.m. in the Batesville Public Library meeting room.

Batesville VFW Post 4968 and Auxiliary meet the first Thursday of every month at the VFW building at 6 p.m.
