March 19, 2013 A dog saved from a house fire on Rollins Drive in Batesville last Friday gets attention from BFD firefighter Jackie Chapman. Firefighters pulled two dogs out of the home, and both were evidently overcome by smoke and acted lethargic. A neighbor took the dogs until the homeowner could arrive. No one else was in the home, but a resident was asleep in a backyard swing when firefighters arrived. The fire started in the kitchen and smoke damaged much of the home, firefighters said. By Rita Howell

The Panolian readers are asked to help the newspaper staff determine the 2013 Photo of the Year. Editors have combed through the year's published pictures and narrowed the field to five. Readers are asked to go online and vote for their favorite. The photo with the most votes will be published in the New Year's Eve edition of The Panolian.

The "finalists" are: college football signing day photo of Tony Conner and his family at South Panola High School; Batesville firefighter Jackie Chapman with a chihuahua rescued from a housefire; Magnolia Grove Monastery's open house; football game officials and members of the Lightsey family on the field during a moment of prayer for Coach Robert Lightsey; South Panola High School's homecoming queen.

View all the photos online at www.panolian.com and vote for your favorite. Only one vote per computer per day will count. Voting starts today and ends at 3 p.m. Friday, December 27.
