'Straight-up' man shot dead

By John Howell Sr.

Law enforcement officials are pleading for information about a Friday night murder on Boyd Street in Batesville.

Tovell Lanier Henderson, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 10:30 p.m., Police Chief Tony Jones said, apparently from a gunshot wound. Officers were dispatched to the dead-end street off Martin Luther King Street between Armstrong and Bright Streets after callers reported hearing gunshots. When they arrived, they found the Henderson lying on the ground.

“I’m sure there must be some witnesses who can tell us something, we just need them to come forward,” Jones said. “If anybody saw anything or knows anything, they can contact BPD detective Jeremiah Brown or Panola County Sheriff’s investigator Barry Thompson,” who is assisting in the investigation, Jones said.

Henderson was an employee of Batesville Casket Company. “He had never been in any trouble or anything like that,” the police chief said. “As far as we know, he was a straight-up guy.”

Panola County Coroner Gracie Grant-Gulledge said that the body had been sent to Jackson for autopsy. She said she expected to learn the autopsy results by late Monday or early Tuesday.
