Bridge closings coming on five county roads

By Billy Davis

Five bridges in Panola County will likely be closed this week until they’re improved, county engineer Larry Britt said Monday.

Britt informed the Panola County Board of Supervisors of the pending closures at its Second District meeting in Batesville.

The Panolian reported last week the bridge closures affect county roads Cline, Orwood, Lucius Taylor, Old Panola, and Rooks.

Two bridges are affected on Rooks, three on Old Panola, and one bridge on Cline, Orwood, and Lucious, county road manager Lygunnah Bean said last week.

Bean also said strict safety standards imposed by the federal Highway Administration are forcing the closure of bridges that are not dangerous to the public.

Any order to close the bridges would come from State Aid, an office within the Miss. Department of Transportation.

Britt said he and Bean are asking State Aid to allow the bridges on Lucius Taylor and Orwood to remain open if the county removes asphalt and gravel, which would improve their weight limit.

Bean said last week the bridges on Lucius Taylor and Orwood have yet to be programmed through State Aid, meaning any improvements are not planned for the near future.
