Hounds fetch tax gain

By Rupert Howell

The City of Batesville’s Tourism and Economic Development Tax, a three percent tax of food and lodging, for the month of January increased by 18 percent from $81,939 to $96,717 according to recently released figures.

The increase is at least partially credited to the UKC’s Winter Classic Coonhound Competition held the last weekend in January that brought houndsmen from as far as Canada for a weekend of hunting and show competition headquartered at Batesville Civic Center.

UKC recently announced return of the Classic for the 2014 and 2015 events in Batesville following their inaugural Batesville weekend of successful hunting, good facilities and hospitality from the local community and host hunting clubs.

The city receives approximately $1 million each year from the tourism tax with most of the funds used to pay notes on Batesville Civic Center. (See related story, A9.)
