Green Wave takes down Lee

By Will Dickins
The North Delta baseball team turned things around Thursday night with a win over Lee Academy in Clarksdale by winning 14-5.
It was a comeback effort in a much needed win for the Green Wave who had just lost two district games earlier in the week.  Winning by nine seemed to be a long shot early in the game.  Lee Academy earned a three point lead with five runs in the bottom of the second inning.
North Delta knew they had to claw their way back and they did scoring two in the third inning and five in the fourth inning to take a 9-5 lead.  In the third inning, Jones Montgomery reached first base before making his way to third with Luke Noah at the plate.  Noah delivered an RBI double to give the Green Wave the momentum.  Zach Adams would later score on an errant throw to home.
In the fourth inning, scoring came in bunches. Noah went to the plate with runners in scoring position again looking for a similar result. With two outs, the pressure was on and he delivered again hitting a line drive just over the second baseman for two more RBI’s.  This gave North Delta the lead, and they never looked back.
They  were not done in the fourth inning.  With two outs, North Delta continued to score.  With Noah and Adams on base, Hunter Houston smacked a ground ball back up the middle for another two RBI single.  The scoring finally ended after Forrest Pierce hit a ground rule double to score one more.
In this time, Adams took control of the pitching duties not allowing Lee Academy to score for the rest of the game.  He also only gave up one hit with eight strikeouts in five innings of work.  Adams filled up the strike zone while fooling batters with a curveball to keep Lee Academy on their heels at the plate.
While Lee Academy remained scoreless, North Delta continued to pour in the runs.  The fifth inning started with Luke Daniels reaching on a walk.  This brought up Montgomery once again.   This time he hit a long fly ball going back towards the left field wall.  As it kept going and going, it eventually soared over the fence for this season’s first home run.  The two RBI home run made the score 11-5.
The Green Wave would add three more runs for insurance in the seventh inning before Adams finished off Lee Academy making the final score 14-5 North Delta.
They are now 1-2 in district play where they look to have a higher seed for the District Tournament in April.  They travel to Kirk Academy today for another opportunity to get a district win.
