Pope falls short to Lafayette County

Pope basketball teams played a back breaker last Thursday at home against Lafayette.
Both teams fell with the Lady Bulldogs falling 13-8 and the boys 28-17. The bulldogs came out with a vengeance in an attempt to make a comeback from their last loss to Lafayette earlier this season.
Lafayette 13 – Pope 8
The Lady Bulldogs were unable to score in the first quarter but held Lafayette to two field goals.
Pope’s Katie Calvert was fouled in the second quarter which put her at the free throw line for a point. Lafayette answered with another field goal to end the first half.
In the third quarter, Calvert pulled down a rebound and passed the ball to Haven Dulin, who took it to the hole scoring a field goal. Lafayette answered with a field goal to end the third.
The fourth quarter saw its share of fouls and free throws for the Lady Bulldogs. Lafayette fouled on the Lady Bulldogs six times, for a possible 12 points.
Dulin was fouled first and made one. Back-to-back fouls continued to offer Pope points as Ally Campbell and Brooklyn Byford scored one point each. Lafayette managed to score a field goal and a free throw as Dulin took the rebound for Pope and was fouled.
Dulin made each basket and scored the final two points for Pope. With seconds remaining, a Lafayette player raced back to the net and sank a basket for two. Lafayette managed to keep the lead and claimed the 13-8 win.
Lafayette 28 – Pope (boys) 17
Lafayette got the ball first but was unable to score until a Lafayette player was fouled and when they scored their first point.
Kavion Bobo took the ball downtown and scored a three-pointer and one. Lafayette scored three more points on three separate free throws with only seconds remaining in the first.
Three fouls on Pope offered Lafayette three points in the second. Bobo made up for the points with another three-pointer.
Lafayette managed to keep the ball at the end of the half, scoring three baskets with only seconds remaining.
Lafayette came out for the second half scoring on a field goal and one and another foul on Pope allowed Lafayette to continue scoring. After scoring on a free throw, Lafayette sank another field goal.
Pope’s Lidarrick Brooks scored Pope’s first point of the second half on a free throw. After another field goal by Lafayette, L. B. Benson scored two back to back field goals.
Brooks shot another free throw shot, earning Pope another point. Lafayette scored a field goal to end the third.
With a 10-point lead to start the fourth, Lafayette scored another field goal and one. Brooks and Benson scored the final four points for Pope with two field goals. With 11 seconds left in the game, Lafayetter attempted another shot for two. Lafayette took the win over Pope 28-17.
Pope will travel to face Montgomery County on January 9 at 5 p.m.
