Sheriff’s Report:Resident finds boat burning in back yard

A few Panola County residents started last week dealing with fire personnel regarding property fires at their residences.
On October 10 Investigator Terry Smith responded to Rutherford Road and spoke with a resident who stated she observed smoke and fire coming from a large wooded area behind her house.
Fire department personnel and the Mississippi Forrestry Commission used heavy equipment to block the fire from spreading, but approximately 45 to 50 acres burned.
According to the report, Investigator Smith spoke with a nearby resident who stated she did not know anything about the fire.
The case is continuing to be investigated as arson.
Later that day, Deputy George Renfroe was called to a residence on Tocowa Road, Courtland.
According to the report, the resident stated sometime throughout the night someone set fire to his property. Investigator Smith was notified of the incident and is continuing the investigation.
On October 12 a Smart Road, Como resident reported to Deputy Harold Lewis his friend’s boat was parked at his residence.
“I walked out of my back door to enjoy the nice weather and I saw the boat burning, but there was no one around it,” the resident stated in the report.
The incident is under further investigation.
October 7
• Compress Road, Como resident reported to Deputy John Still the suspect bought an auto twirler pro from the resident’s company on the internet for $2,500. According to the report, the suspect reported the product was damaged and wanted to return it. The resident stated the item returned was old and used and not the item that was returned.
• Batesville resident reported to Lieutenant Chuck Tucker her ex-husband took some old checks from her home and cashed three of them. According to the report, the bank has flagged the account so no more checks will go through.
• Deputy Bill Furniss responded to Shady Grove to meet with an individual regarding a custody matter.
According to the report, the individual stated her husband refused to bring her children to meet her for visitation. The individual provided court papers that stated law enforcement shall assist if needed in the children’s transfer.
Deputy Furniss along with the individual went to the husband’s residence and was met outside by the husband who stated, “she can’t come onto our property and she isn’t taking the children for visitation.” Deputy Furniss and the individual filed a report for contempt of court.
October 8
• Sarah resident reported to Deputy Still his daughter assaulted his other daughter who is a juvenile. According to the report, the victim had a large contusion on her right eye. The suspect was arrested and taken to Panola County jail.
• Lieutenant Tucker spoke to a Shiloh Road, Courtland resident who stated she noticed a two seater go-cart missing from her shed. According to the report, the go-cart did not run and had to be pushed away.
•  Hickory Hill Road resident reported to Lieutenant Tucker her neighbors German shepherd comes in her yard and jumps on her six-year-old daughter.
According to the report, the resident has spoken to the neighbor about the dog but he still does not put the dog up. “I know the dog is just playing, but he plays too rough,” the resident stated.
October 9
• Deputy Josh Griffin took a report from a Highway 310, Como resident who stated a bag was stolen from her vehicle.
According to the report, the resident stated the bag contained her prescription medication, two pair of contact lenses and a pair of glasses.
October 10
• Investigator Smith spoke to a County resident who reported she has a three-year-old daughter with the suspect.
According to the report, about two months ago DHS received a report of possible child abuse by the father.
Another individual reported to the mother she heard the suspect had nude photos of his daughter on his phone. The incident is under further investigation.
• Belmont Road, Sardis resident stated to Deputy Britton Crawford her child’s father pulled a gun and pointed it at her while she was driving in the Green Hill Circle area.
• Deputy Crawford responded to another report of assault on Highway 51 North where the resident stated five subjects have been harassing her and pulled up to her home in a dark grey Dodge Charger.
One subject opened the trunk and grabbed a tire iron and the other subjects proceeded to assault her and her husband, according to the report.
• Magnolia Street, Pope resident reported someone trespassed onto his property to move a water meter.
October 11
• Deputy Crawford was dispatched to Abraham road for a disturbance. According to the report, an individual reported he was walking through his aunt’s yard when a man pointed a pistol at him and stated he better stay out of the yard or he was going to shoot him.
• Waldrop Road resident reported to Deputy Crawford she let her son go see his father, but the father allowed the uncle to watch the child for the day. According to the report, the uncle advised he was in Memphis and that he was not going to bring the child back.
Deputy Crawford spoke with the uncle who stated as soon as he came home from Memphis he would take the child back to the father and the resident could make arrangements with the father to get the child back home.
• Highway 322 resident reported his truck was parked in his yard and he noticed items missing from the truck and his mother’s vehicle which was also parked in the yard.
According to the report, approximately $530 of property was stolen from the vehicles.
• Askew Road, Crenshaw resident reported his trailer that was chained to a light pole was gone. According to the report, the suspects cut the lock off the chain and left with the $1900 trailer.
• Plum Point Road, Pope resident reported a dog was always on her property and continuously tore up many decorative items in the yard.
According to the report, Deputy Crawford attempted to make contact with the dog’s owner but no one was at the residence at the time.
October 12
• Lucious Taylor Road, Como resident reported to Lieutenant Tucker her 2011 Nissan Titan was parked at Green Hill last night. According to the report, when the resident looked at her truck this morning she noticed the back bumper was bent.

• October 6: Car hit an animal on Old Panola Road.
• October 8: Car lost control on Old Panola Road. An injury was reported.
• October 10: Two cars collided on Ballentine Road.
• October 13: Car hit a deer on Cotton Plant Road.
• October 13: Two cars collided on Hays crossing.
Juvenile Incidents
• October 8: A 15-year-old got into trouble for an assault that took place on Fowler Road.
• October 14: 13-year-old landing in hot water after an aggravated assault on Eureka Road.
